Prior to this you had 3 or 4 networks and PBS over the air. That was TV. This gave you 20-30 channels that worked pretty well most of the time. It was a game changer in the 80s. VCRs became mainstream around same time so you could watch things on your schedule for first time ever. Eventually they came out with cable ready TVs for the fancy people but getting one of these boxes was a big deal at one point.
