1988 RM250 DG pipe with no dent for radiator hose

Edited Date/Time 1/23/2022 4:07pm
Hi guys. I am new to this forum. I saw some discussions about the 87-88 pipe for the RM250. My bike is an 88 but had an 87 pipe on it which fit perfectly. I then decided to buy an 88 pipe for it since the rest of the bike is 100% original. I ended up buying an 88 DG pipe (brand new old stock) which fits perfectly too except for the radiator hose which is squished between the pipe and the cylinder. I have not ridden the bike after I installed the pipe but am sure it will overheat since water will not circulate properly because of this. I am almost making a dent on the pipe in order to give the hose enough clearance (the 87 pipe already had a factory dent on it for this purpose). Can anyone give me a hint on what else I could do (rather not dent my brand new pipe!). Thanks

Very limited supply of pipes for the 88 as I”m sure you know by now, if it fits but needs a little dent to make clearance for the hose, do what you have to do! If you plan on riding it, the pipe can’t sit on the hose....I had to dent my new DG pipe for my 84RM250 also, to clear a engine mount bolt. All this means nothing without photos....

Thanks for getting back to me! I had I bike like this on in 88 with a pipe from pro circuit which fit perfectly. This pipe from DG is not a low boy pipe like the ine from PC but it looks nice too. The only issue is the fitting of the radiator hose which intrigues me. I wonder if back in 88 riders had to reroute the hose or they made a dent on the pipe themselves.

Not too much to offer, but I would not be scared to dent it. Heat it up, and use a thick walled steel pipe to bang on to form in just how you need. I think if you took your time you could make a clean factory look, and then just buff out the heat marks and you would be set. Good Luck!

Do you still have the Pro Circuit pipe that you took off? I am looking for a Pro Circuit works pipe for my 88 RM-250 if you have it and would be interested in selling it?

That’s not bad, heat it up, dent it in where it hits the hose, then wrap hose with some heat tape..nice bike...

The 88 RM250 I owned in 88 was sold in 89 when I got an 89 RM 250. Never seen that bike after that, sorry! My current RM I purchased recently and it came with an 87 pipe (which fit perfectly). I am intrigued because the 87 pipe that was on the bike is a DG pipe too and it had the factory dent for the radiator hose but the new pipe I got specific for the 88 model does not - a bit frustrating to say the least but I'll make a dent as suggested by everyone - Just hope I am able to make it look minimally decent.

Quick feedback on my pipe. I heated up the pipe and made the dent as instructed. I honestly thought it would be much easier - had to hammer the pipe with no mercy to get it to give in! I was able to dent it enough to get the hose by without being squashed but it still touches the pipe. Since it has the extra sleeve to protect it from the heat, I hope it should be ok now. At least the dent has a factory look which made me happy. Smile

I forgot to mention I finally took the bike out for the first ride (and my first ride after 15 years). It worked great but I have a major leak at the flange. It is either not tight enough (was concerned not to over tighten) or I might have put the gasket backwards (not sure if there is a specific side that should go against the motor). The bike ran awesome though and the only issue that I noticed is the bottom shock linkage/bushings developed some play and will have to be replaced/serviced. Not sure how complex this will be and I hope to find the parts I might need on Ebay.

The 88 250 pipe is very rare, Look at the Facebook group for 84-88 RM”s, I believe a few guys making cone pipes from the UK or Holland maybe. Won’t be cheap, but they are works of art. Here is a photo of my 88 with a raw PC pipe on it 👍

I have a DG pipe and I think silencer that was on my 88 RM250 if you were interested.

I am actually having a couple of cone pipes made for the 88 right now and hoping to have them in the next month. They are damn expensive and take a long time to get, should be well worth the cost and time once I get them.

I will post some pictures of the new pipe once they have arrived.

Here is the system that I have. One tiny ding on the lower side that I have circled. Other than that it is in excellent shape and has minimal use.
