If I were to speculate, he got the job he has been working for, which is fire fighter/EMT or something in that line of work.

EMT / Police Officer / Fire Fighter - all suitable jobs for him. He's got a good personality and sense of humor. Smart move and good career stability. No travel.

He better stay in the industry, you don t get hangers and a** kissers working in the fire dept. He s been spoiled, and working as public safety is a whole new world! Shift work , people that don t appreciate your line of work, Dangerous line of work. But if thats what he wants good luck to him. He s gonna be coming to a reality check.

If this is what he has chose to do, he will be fine. Many riders have joined the "real" world and excelled. He's been spoiled? hhmmmmm, all those years of hard work racing certainly didn't pave the way for where he is now. He definetely didn't pay his dues and earn respect from the industry, it was all handed to him.

Give me a break!

Reality check? I am sure he has thought long and hard about what he is doing and last I checked there is a lot of training that comes along with that. They just don't give you a uniform and send you to work. Maybe after he actually makes money and can retire he can go back to the race industry old, retitred and happy.

I never said it was a bad job being a officer , emt or fireman is a great career, i have friends in that line of work and i am also, guess my point being is that he is used to getting free stuff all the time and and some people can t get used to working shift work holidays, alota weekends, shift work has caused alota of divorces That line of work is very admirable, Trust me i dont know his salary or his personal business, Being a fireman or police officer is dangerous, benefits and retirement are a plus, but i m sure he has a sweet gig at TLD.

Donald Upton retired from racing and became a paramedic/fire fighter for San Diego. He's doing great. Has a steady income, benefits and RETIREMENT. Last i heard Mike Kiedrowski was trying to get on with Ventura county f.d.

I think the move should open your eye's to what the pay really is in the Industry and the hours are horrible, Ping won't have any trouble working odd hours in fact his biggest problem is going to be having more time at home and less people calling him with problems while he's not at work.

And lets get real you can only wear so many pairs of free goggles and moto t-shirts.

I don't think people understand, there isn't a lot of money and "benefits" from working in the industry. It is kind of like riding as a privateer, your there for the passion not to get rich.



I am sure he will still have all the free swag and stay in touch with all his industry friends. I am sure he isn't turning his back on the sport.



Believe it or not, I don't think working some weekends and holidays is going to be a big deal for a guy that has been to a minimum of 16 SX races and a handfull of outdoor MX's when he has a family and two kids at home. Getting on that plane to go to another race sucks after years of doing it.

Industry guys are salary guys, I bet if you take salaries and divide it by actual hours worked it is PEANUTS per hour, There is no such thing as overtime, time and a half or double time or holiday pay.

Most retired pro's or money earning A riders here are now established in the emt/paramedic gig. Keeps them close to the track and a few are doing group and private lessons.

I''m a local firefighter but would never do it for money.Yeah, good pay but those guys are whacked.....somethin wrong in the head. I have been a volunteer for 10+ YEARS . mY BUDDY IS ON THE eASTON, pA squad but he just ain't right. They are always looking for recognition and shit. I do appreciate the service when it's called for but fire whackers are a special breed.....

Firefighting/EMT is a very rewarding career. I've been a volunteer for 10 years now and when that pager goes off the adrenaline rush is very similiar to sitting on the starting gate. I have some friends that are full time and they love it. They work 24 hour shifts and and only work 2-3 days a week. If they take vacation and switch shifts they can have a month off at a time.

Seems about right...his father-in-law is a fire chief I heard. I wonder how long he's gonna have to be an EMT before he gets hired onto an engine...EMTs make very low pay

Not everybody likes a** kissers. When listening to Ping's interviews, he seems really down to earth. I'm sure he knows what he's getting into. Being a team manager at a smaller team like TLD can't be easy and I bet the pay is a lot smaller than people think. It's pretty difficult to do any long-term planning in the industry, when employment contracts last only for a few years at a time.

I think its cool and probably a wise decision for Ping to move on to something a little more stable with less travel ect.

Dammit am I bummed though, so far in his career he could be the best up and coming team manager out there. With a small budget and some of the riders he's had, I don't think you can deny that he has made them all better riders and they've had career years. Hell he's even kept BT101 in one piece (fingers crossed).

He's one hell of a funny guy and I guess all I can say is support him in his choices and I wish him all the best!

I was a EMT/firefighter and now am a nurse. There is no way in hell that I would have given up ping's job to be an emt/firefighter. Career suicide maybe? He had to be making more than 30k a year. Thats what I made my last year and thats decent here in GA. Best of luck to him, he better love the job is all I'm sayin, its not what is advertised, lol.
