Femur recovery time

Hello, I recently broke my femur on October 6 with a surgery and they placed a rod and 5 screws and I’m just wondering if I should be riding by then I just reached the 6 week mark tmr as of Sunday and today as of Saturday I rode at a track.

Do you think I should wait to keep riding or should I ik it sounds wrong because I haven’t gotten the okay from my surgeon but I feel fine and I have virtually no pain besides a little bit of knee stiffness/discomfort after riding. I have had multiple broken bones every year since maybe 2020 and last year I broke my tib with a plate and 6 screws and that happened on September 1st and I was riding by November/cleared the break was right below my knee and my femur break was right above my knee

Just trying to get back to it as soon as possible

Thanks

This is the worst place to get medical advice.  It is absolutely okay to assess others experiences but leave that up to your surgeon on when you can return on the bike.  It is not worth getting injured again or making it worse.  Axel Hodges broke his femur and was off the bike for 6+ months.

Take the extra time now to make sure you’re 100 percent. Be patient.  You can’t rush the healing process.  Especially on a major surgery.  We had one of our local privateers break his femur at the red bud National earlier this year and he still isn’t on the bike.

When I broke my femur I lay at my track for 5 hrs before help came. (Pre cell phone days)

My leg had swollen so much that I lay in traction for close on a month before they operated. A plate, six screws and a rod inserted to repair it.

I was on crutches for a long time and the whole ordeal took around 7 - 8 months before I could really start training. I got on the bike at the 10 month mark.

As mentioned above, ask your surgeon.

DO. NOT. RUSH. IT.   Take the advice of your Doc, not us.  I am sorry you broke that big bastard, something like that is not one to hurry along.....   Your future self will thank you when real challenges come up in the future.  Difficult shit, like going up a flight of stairs, of crawling out of bed in the morning after you slept on that leg with all your weight on it  for 6 hrs.  Think big picture

I broke both my femurs and my pelvis in multiple areas back in 2010 in one crash. I think I was riding 8 weeks later even though I was still on crutches. I was religious at going to my physical therapy every week (which was hell btw). Probably not the best idea to be riding that soon, but hey I wanted to ride! I would follow your doctor's advice as others have stated.

When I broke mine I was told non weight bearing for 8-10 weeks. My doctor told me it would just prolong the bone healing by possibly shifting the break even if it only moved minutely. With that break being so close to your hip joint I'd take it extra careful, looks like you'll only get one shot at making it work with a rod and screws. Much easier to take a few extra weeks and get released from the doctor, unless you've got a multi-million dollar contract on the line that is. JMHO though.

Anyone that offers a time when you can ride again is WRONG. As someone mentioned, ask your Doctor. Why the hell are you asking people here.

There is absolutely no set time that a person can safely put high loads on their leg after breaking it because peoples physiology etc varies, and the repair type and/or repair quality can vary.

The ONLY way ANYONE can determine if it is at least reasonably safe to subject your leg to high impact is a medical doctor that deals in these types of injuries, and they can only determine that after viewing an X ray.

I had spiral break in my femur and they put a rod in and my doctor would not clear me to ride MX until the 4 month mark. I broke the same leg just below the hip socket and couldn't ride for 6 months even with a plate ad screws. My friend broke his femur and had the same type of repair that I did and it was 6 months before he could ride. I broke by fib and tib and had a cast on for 6 fkng months.

Also, if you break that leg again, and you bend the rod, you may be completely fkd.

I broke mine mid shaft and neck going to the hip joint.  Two surgery's and 8 weeks no load bearing.  Dr. released me to ride when my strength was back to "normal", about 5 months.  This was in February of 2000 and I can tell you that now it does not bother me as much as a friend that broke his a year later bothers him.  He didn't take his Dr's advise.

I see you on this one fs though while I’m reading these and multiple other threads I’ve seen that most of the people’s breaks where femoral shaft fractures and they couldn’t walk for multiple weeks I was walking the same day I got out of surgery/full weight bearing just needed help with the crutches due to my knee being swollen as a mf and my incisions also I think I am going to try and see if I can go get a check up or something a little earlier due to my next appt being on January 7th I had a lot of bone growth about 4 weeks in and by now from all of my other breaks/ experience I would assume that the bone is healed. Think the reason they put you out for so long is due to the fact that you tear through all your muscle when you break it I mean for me I don’t have the biggest of legs and my break was just near to being a compound but this is all just my opinion. Also note I am not hitting jumps as I haven’t been cleared just hopping on the track and practicing corners.

Well it's obvious now that all you are doing is looking for a reason to ride before going to the doctor, so here is what you should do based solely upon your desire, ride as hard as you want right now, and hit those 90 foot jumps, and I guarantee that everything will be fine. 😀

Wow, at 6 weeks I tried walking, the screws sheared off and leg collapsed,i had to wait another 7 weeks before i was walking.

I'm now 10mm shorter.

Mine was a spiral fracture fwiw.

Every injury and every person is different. for me-

Left Femur in '89-  rod and walking in a couple of days, riding in 8 weeks, racing in 10.

Right Femur in '92- rod and screws and other fixes walking in 3 weeks riding in 3 months racing in 4

Left Femur #2 and pelvis '99- remove broken rod and replace, extensive surgery rehab racing in 8 months

They're all different. One of my close friends didn't heal fully for over a year almost.

Both of mine were done simultaneously; one healed in 8 weeks, and the other healed in 2 months. Based on the rod you have, I would like to see if you can have it removed before riding again. Everyone is different, but it could do more harm to your hip with that rod placement. Ask your doctor, though; take notes from guys that have broken their femurs on here, but your doctor knows best. Go to PT and take ice baths to move the blood around. It's the initial swelling that makes it painful.

Any reason you have to get back on the bike so fast? I know a lot of guys on here get back riding as soon as possible after an injury.
