You really can't say that there was a lack of advertising, the race was still held on the same weekend it would have been if the nats were there. People decided not to come because it wasn't a nat, plain and simple.

But surely given more time and prior knowledge of US rider involvement they could have really played up the USA versus the world aspect, which would attract more normal people (as opposed to just us crazy MX fans).

Most of those people probably just heard that the national was cancelled and thought there wasn't a race.

This is just me guessing of course.

I am sure if we were to run a National in Europe the outcome would be the same if none of the Euros showed up to race. It would also be a losing proposition if the promoter had to pay a huge fee to hold the National and pay a purse on top. It just seems to me that the GP's work great in Europe and the Nationals work great here because it the system everyone is used to. Nothing more nothing less.
See now this is where the two sides differ massively - most European Motocross fans follow the Nationals very closely (aswell as Supercross but to a slightly lesser extent). If a National was held anywhere in Europe (which lets face it, is unlikely) it would almost certainly attract a great crowd. If a race was held in Italy for example, fans from England, France, Germany, Sweden etc would all flock to the event.

And not trying to brag that 'oh our fans are better than yours', or crap like that, Im just telling you how it is over here. And another thing, we wouldn't bitch and moan about it all afterwards thats for sure.

I think two GPs here is a great strategy if they can afford it. I think the GP riders and the entire World Championship concept will need to earn the fans respect and admiration here. Eventually I would be great for the FIM or whoever to offer a true World Championship series and hold one round here in the US (and some other deserving countries) every year. It isn't a true World Championship now in the minds of 99% of the American fans. Who cares how fast some guy from Italy is (or Belgium, or Germany)? He doesn't race here. We never see him ride.

America doesn't need a GP presence here. If the the GP people want to hold successful races here, they will have to build the respect, admiration and the desire of the fans. In a very real sense, the GPs will have to become part of our American Tradition of Moto Cross before we will accept being part of the World GP tradition.
