As a fan, am I disappointed that he’s not going, of course I am. If he truly is getting work done on his wrist, then his responsibility is to Star Racing and all his sponsors to make sure that he is ready for the beginning of next season.

That’s an intelligent and thoughtful comment that accurately reflects the facts of the situation. Therefore, it’s completely unwelcome here, we don’t do nuance at Vital, you have to pick between fluffer and hater.

“You have to pick between Fluffer and Hater” 🤣

Priceless! Because, for far too many fanboys…as shown in this thread…it’s true.

This is a fairly popular take, but be honest: how many pro athlete contracts have “likeability clauses?” How many scouting combines of any sport are based on the potential fan appeal of the up and coming athletes? What metric would they even use, social media likes?

Sure, the sponsors expect results in the form of increased sales, of product, of event tickets, but it’s their responsibility to use marketing and advertising to convert fan interest into fan action. And it is the sponsors’ fervent belief that RESULTS in competition drive fan interest… which is why they pay for wins. An unlikeable winner still gets paid win bonuses, still draws crowds, still gets sponsorship money. And you buy the bike, the pipe, the tires, etc, because they are proven winners. Not because you like the rider, not really. Admit it.

Did Suzuki sell a shitload of 2023 RMs because “Kickstart Kenny” had a long autograph line?

Im pretty sure 'likeability clauses' as you put it is never really a 'thing'.A team's 'A' rider will be employed for the win, no doubt. But...

Im pretty sure 'likeability clauses' as you put it is never really a 'thing'.

A team's 'A' rider will be employed for the win, no doubt. But when it comes to the team's 'B' rider, I reckon social media appeal (read, followers) is definately taken in to consideration.

If your 'B' rider can only be a 10th-13th place guy, do the sponsors select the guy with a booming YT channel and 250k followers or the fellow 10th-13th place guy with no social media prescence? Its a no brainer.

Ask guys like McElrath, Wilson, Anstie, Craig, WHY they bother to do their vlogs.... and see what they say.
And ask Eli why he never felt he needed to..

Honestly, this is the first time I’ve ever heard of motocross teams hiring “A” and “B” riders, and I have been following the sport since the late 1970s. Please say more about this strategy. For teams with more than 2 racers, is more of the alphabet used?

Really??
This has been a thing forever.
A factory team buys their 1st guy with a goal to win. Then their second guy to get the best possible result for the money.

Let’s say they have $1.5m to spend on riders..

Their chosen ‘winner’ costs $1m… do you think they’re finding an equally talented rider for 500k??

Think Kenny & Cole.
Think Eli & Joey.

Think Chase & Aaron.
Think RV & Weimer..

Notice the pattern??

Otherwise 1 team would’ve bought RV2 & RD5 and bossed it all..

More than 2 riders?? Maybe… each rider has a value and a pecking order.

He may not earn anything on the day, but if the whole world can see you’re the best, the manufacturers are watching..

of course… it could go the other way..🤷‍♀️

I see what you mean, but I have never seen any pro motocross racers, particularly factory racers, called “B” riders, even if they were considered second tier to the star. Can you show any examples of this in print or online?

No, I cannot show any examples in print or online. But that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
We all know it. But most of all the riders all know it when they see their salaries.

You think JCoop is earning the same as Eli & Webb??

Please accept my apology. I was being pedantic wrt the “A” and “B” nomenclature. Of course there are different levels of racers.

And I realize my original point, that a pro athlete only has two responsibilities (to the contract holders and to themselves), is also incorrect; there are multiple stakeholders involved that, taken together, create the marketplace that supports the livelihood of these athletes. Paying fans are a significant portion of this.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in and helped me see this differently.

I'm puzzled. There is an urgency to get his wrist fixed, instead of the des Nations race, yet all is good for the next 3 weekends for the SMX playoffs. Go Chance.

Maybe not forever...I'm struggling to think who is the "B" rider here. Unless "B" stands for "badass"

SMX pays well, MXoN does not.

A whole lot of things start to make sense if you factor in the dollars. And I’m not criticizing HD at all for that, this is his job/career, I totally understand. I’d like it if he went to the MXoN, but I get what he’s doing.

I agree

It’s the narrative dreamed up to support a rider who doesn’t care.

Every SX/MX fan I know cares a lot. The huge crowd at Red Bud certainly cared…

Without fans there is no money for any "pro" sports.  In my opinion, you can't waive the flag around all year long to rile up the fans, become your country's national champion, and then refuse to represent that flag on the the biggest international motocross stage of the year.  I for one do not care to see our national pride manipulated and shit on this way.

So electing to get a surgery to have pins removed is shitting on our national pride?

That’s a strange sense of patriotism you have there.

As opposed to?  If he doesn’t get it done sooner rather than later, it could pose the risk of further injuring his wrist.

It’s nice to see all you with Ph.D’s in downvoting interpret and diagnose his injury and the best course of action for its proper healing and recovery, but when you break it down, all you’re doing assuming and speculating with no facts to support your claims.

Does he owe the fans anything? Maybe not. But it’s nice to have those fans on your side and in your corner.

If he doesn’t want to go, then that’s his prerogative, but if you’re going to run the captain America gimmick, and talk about how bad you want to beat everyone and show that you’re the best, then you don’t step up when the opportunity presents itself, you have to expect some criticism.

I’m sure next year he’ll be desperate to race at Ironman and show he’s the best 250 rider in the world, but even if he does do that, the fact will remain that all the guys he’s racing against were prepared to come and take him on in his back yard, and he wasn’t prepared to come to theirs

Stanton turned it down when it was held in Australia in 1992.

He’s having minor surgery and will have 3 months after MXoN until SX starts, 4 months until East coast starts. If it absolutely had to be done at that time, he wouldn’t have been in contention at any point. There wouldn’t have been any waiting to see who is in or out.

By the way, the surgery he’s having done is on an injury he was telling everyone he didn’t have, whilst at the same time saying ‘I wish the fans knew what we go through’.

If he really wanted to be there, he would be.

Why isn't Chase getting this flack??

Because Chase doesnt give it the Captain America trash talk about beating everyone & anyone and then avoiding it when the opportunity arises.
