After reading the thread about Sexton his bonus on his Outdoor championship I was wondering, how much bonus do mechanics get from the factory/team?
I've read a few times that for a team like KTM, all points scored over all riders will be divided over all of the mechanics, making it as fair as possible to give everyone the same amount of $. Not sure if that is true though.
And how about riders, do they give out bonusses to their practice and race mechanics? Does anyone know any example of riders giving an 'x' percentage of their bonus towards their mechanic, or where they don't give any at all?
I've heard from a source close to me that Pauls Jonass always gives (a part or sometimes 100% of) his start money from national/local races to his mechanic.
10% is something I hear a lot from mechanics but it’s technically up to the rider how much of their bonus the mechanic gets.

It’s typically 10% of manufacture bonuses. That’s why if a rider wanted to be dirty he could have gotten around paying for an smx championship.
I remember an interview with Doc Wob, who wrenched for a lot of top AMA riders in the 90s. saying he was amazed at the generosity of the riders who paid him a cut of their gear, goggle, boot & helmet bonuses as well as their factories.
10% is pretty common of the manufacturers bonus. A lot of times foreign riders are not the best with paying.

I do know that one rider in the 90's gave his mechanic one of his bikes as bonus.

Are the mechanics considered contractors like the riders or are they employees of the team/factory?
10% huh? Is there a cap though? Like say $100,000 that the mechanic can get in bonus money. I know some of you love speculation so lets do that shall we. Hold on while I get my HP48GX calculator out from my time wasted trying to be an engineer.
Chase Sexton won 9 races this year between sx and mx. At $100,000 bonus per round for a win that is $900,000. So the mechanic bonus would be $90,000
Chase won the mx championship. If the championship bonus is $1m, the mechanic would get $100,000
So, his mechanic made $190,000 just from KTM bonus payout. Ad in a base salary of lets say $50,000 and 10% of the gear bonus money that lets say is $500,000, that's another $50,000 to the mechanic.
Grand total that Chase Sextons mechanic has made so far this year: $290,000.
Do we all really think that he got that much in bonus pay? I don't. I bet its capped at something like $100,000.
And didn't Chase switch mechanics partway through the season? So would he get full championship bonus if he only wrenched for part of the season, probably not. But it sounds like a mechanic can do pretty well for himself.
I’m not sure about a cap but it’s typically manufacturer bonuses they get a cut of. Not all the other stuff.

With majority of them you,d be lucky to get that. 1 of the most popular mechanics with a few championships Jeremy Albright had to become a team manager. From Emig and Stewart screwing him over. I don’t think mechanics do that good money wise. In 2015 a millionaire was 2.4 million. A million now is nice but it’s 450k after taxes if that. A lot of people hv close to a million in there 401k,s . And there not rich.
There is no set amount, it depends on the rider. Reed didn’t give his mechanics anything for a long time, while RC gave his mechanic a good bonus, and divided the ama purse out to the team.
Emig made a deal with Albrech for 50k a title, I don’t think he paid one of them.
Most teams they are contracted help. MCR treats them like employee and gives them insurance, that rare.
If you're only getting 450k from your million income, you really need a new tax guy.

There is no set.
Reed would give bonuses to whole team on top of his mechanic (minus matthes)
Id imagine there is champion mechanics who got boned and ones who made pay days
