Need Aussie Help

During Hunters podium speech he said a slang term and told the kids to cover their ears. I rewound it a bunch of times but couldn’t tell what he was saying. Anyone know what he said?

Thanks dude, but unless I’m going crazy he said buggered the second time. I even turned on subtitles to read it but they wouldn’t put it on there haha. If he did say buggered then thanks I just misheard it

is buggered a curse word in OZ slang?

Haha yep

Root is essentially equal to fuck so any variant is you are or you're doing haha so that's why we giggle when you guys say that you 'root' for someone.. I can say pretty much use any swear word around my Mum except for root and fuck and if I do I have to stand up (well had to, good luck now haha) and apologise..

Obviously I'd never be caught dead using the c word around her though haha (See I'd normally write it but just the mention of her haha)

Yeah, the Aussies ran out of profanities years ago and had to assign profane meanings to other common words so they could adequately express themselves.

You know, things like - Foster's: Asstrayan for $@#!Grinning

Buggered is used to describe being exhausted, I'm rooted, f*cked, buggered etc. It's literal meaning is the same as sodomised.

Important to note that cunted can also mean tired, as in "I'm cunted".

Unlike US English, in NZ, Aus, and the UK, cunt can also be positive, as in "he's a good cunt'.

I laughed hard when he said he “was rooted”. It was a common profanity in Australia decades ago, but slowly bit by bit American terms have taken over here and “fucked” is more dominant now. Good to hear Hunter hasn’t forgotten his roots 😂

Which is why - as pointed out - we laugh when you all keep saying so and so is rooting for someone.  "I'm rooting for Chase Sexton" - makes it sound like you're having sex for Chase Sexton's benefit.

I don't consider rooted, buggered or knackered etc. to be swearing. I consider it to be a PG way of saying he’s fucked without swearing.

I guess growing up with these terms they all feel kind of innocent though. Depending on the context ofcourse.

Depends on your household I guess. As a kid I could get away with buggered and knackered, but saying rooted was a quick way to get backhanded.

Which is funny when you consider what buggered actually means…

There are acutally laws on the books in the US that use the term buggery.

Of course, since it seems to be so popular nowadays (especially with our political class) you don't see it enforced very often.

Just wish we could charge our political leaders with it based on what they do to their constituents.
