Where to get cylinder - which way to go?

Hi All,

I have a chance to get my older YZ125 back on the track. It's the old Motocross.com bike so it has a lot of goodies like Hinson clutch, black rims, gold spokes, anodized black frame, etc.

But, it has been in someone else's hands while I was away and it was rebuilt by a vendor who will remain un-named.

They sleeved it with a steel liner and it promptly blew up! Then they rebuilt it again and it promptly blew up!

I think they told the guy who had it that the sleeve was so big you gould not put a Nikasel liner back in. So I would guess that cylinder is junk?

I'd like to get it back to stock 125cc or maybe 134cc but not do a GYTR/Athena big-bore kit...

The bottom end is 110% fresh and so is most of the bike...

Can anyone recommend vendors to look at who can supply a cylinder/head combo? I would think that Athena would be on that list but I cannot reach them, Millenium, Wiseco, maybe Eric Gore?

I've been over across the pond so need some help with new vendors on the scene.

Go with Millenium or Eric Gorr. Millenium does stock some cylinders and may be able to help you out. Otherwise, get a new one from Yamaha and go from there.

Why do people "sleeve" a cylinder? I've never heard ran across one I couldn't get Millenium to repair.

The answer to your question is you can bore a steel sleeve cylinder, you can't bore a Nikasil coated cylinder....just FYI

If the engine "promptly blew up", as in broke a piston or ring, be sure to get all of the stray metal out of the lower end, or a new cylinder / sleeve will be promptly ruined.

Eric Gorr's Forward Motion, he did all our motors, Mod 85 (Branson National Champ, 2 3rds), all our Super-Minis, 3 trips to Loretta lynn's (5th and 8th) and a killer CR 144, 2 more peak HP than a stock 250F. He talks to you like a human being, not like you are an idiot.

Hi all and thanks for the answers!

- Thanks for the props on the bike, it was great in the day and I think we are going to use it again as a feature bike. Show that you CAN rebuild that older bike and go have fun on it...I see more and more "125 2-stroke only" classes out there. This bike could compete on that level.

- The company that sleeved it is known to all who read this thread

- Everything blew up when it blew up the first time from what I was told. Bottom end and top. The bottom end was rebuilt after that and now the top end is toast again! But the dude shut it right down so no exploding parts (or so he says!).

- I guess I will give Eric Gore a call but would like to know what other services people have used.
