I plan on buying my son a 65 and I wanted to know if there is any parts I should replace with aftermarket parts or is the YZ fine just the way it is.

Here's my take on a 65cc bike:

Save that money you would have spent on mods and put it into practice days. Invest in your kid's speed, form and confidence now, and you'll have plenty of time to mod the bigger bikes later.

Don't be like me... drove 5 hours to pick up a new Husky, on the way back we stopped by Cycle Shack to get a few things... They just so happened to have a YZ on the floor, he sit on it and said, "this bike feels sooo good". I begged him to try one before I bought the husky, needless to say he regrets it. Put your money on training, working on technique and safe riding gear.

if you really want to spend money, get the suspension set up for his weight and speed,

I thought the original question was legit. Obviously most kids at that age will benefit more from money spent on practicing than on a bunch of fancy do-dads, but the YZ65 is new so asking if there is anything in particular to watch for or change change out right away seems like a good question. I dont even have a kid on minis but I am curious how this new yz is doing.

Bike is legit KTM killer... the YPVS power valve system delivers awesome power .. with the right kid this bike hauls and has approx 1.15 hp more than the ktm

Absolute truth ^^, spend most of your racing dollars on training, take them to better races once in a while and always know their lap times to check for improvements.

99% of riders will benefit from just more seat time.

like a fat vet rider really needs a $1,000 exhaust lol

my kid is a top 65 rider right now. He runs completely stock bikes. He has no problem and is at no disadvantage in the mod class against the kids with way too much money in the bikes.

Theres only one top kid that rides a yz65 right now,  and he’s sponsored by Yamaha.

If you don't get a factory ECU you don't stand a chance! 🙂

The stock trip clamps suck.  They will certainly need upgraded if your kids rips.

This. The YZ65 valving is so far off the mark it’s an embarrassment to Yamaha.

Apart from the suspension it’s an awesome bike.

Only thing I added to the 65 for my son was a suspension service for his weight (lighter rear spring), pro taper micro bars, and some jets to clean it up a little bit.

Save the money for an ice cream on the way home from the track.

RR Racing in Germany has some great aftermarket parts for the yz65. They have an extended swingarm which really helps with the balance and suspension of the bike. Also some parts for performance aswell. https://rr-racing.nl/product-category/yamaha-yz65/

Although they typically cater to the Austrian machines and Cobras minis, PAX Racing has a few offerings for the YZ65.
