Hey guys, i ran into this site by coincident but do any of you remember me?..John Bowers riding a Hodaka from Tifton , Ga? Been quite a few years but help get that track in Cairo going back in the 70's when Bob Bell started it. Ran our home track, Jax. Fl, 1974 Orlando (mini cycle 2-1st place 100 cc and a 2nd in 80 cc) and anywhere else we could go! Where did the years....My best years running against Jeff Ward, Rhett Radford who spent a few days at home with me, Tammy Kirk, Timmy Timmons, Audi Ward and so many others great folks of the time from everywhere. Started out Yamaha, Indian, Honda and the best of all Hodaka sponsored by Thigpen distributors who had the 7 souteastern states. I find it so damn cool that folks still talk about us "old timers"!

John: I stumbled in on this site, too. I may have some pics of you and the group we rode with. I'll try to scan them to you. I rememebr a trip to the NML Wnter series race in jacksonville but i think it was in 1974. Ward was there, so was David Bailey - All irememeber seeing was the cloud of sand-dust after the start, haha. It was about 35 degrees that year and we just about froze solid.

I DO remember those Hodakas Don Day (Thigpen) built would absolutely FLY.

I sent you an e-mail. get back to me and i'll get you some pics.

Cool pics and article on Holland. That has to be 1979. And that one guy has a ton of balls riding a KX-80 back then!

man, in 28 years, they sure haven't changed them pee wees much. I bought my son one recently, and besides the blue and not really referring to them as Y-zingers anymore, there doesn't look like much difference, lol

Don't think its Larry. if you look at the YZ, it is white which means it would be at least 1985. Larry rode a 125 in 1985. I think this pic is 1986. #1 could be Rick Simmit

Going back a few pages, at the '76 NMA Nationals in Springfield, MO, I was running the 83cc stock expert 9-11 and the 105 class. While waiting for the next stock expert moto, the "big boys" (12-15 class) were racing. Randy Tysor, Bryan Myerscough, Wardy, Mike Brown and Jimmy Holley were putting some incredible laps in. At the checkered flag, you went down the straight to the next jump (there were 3) and exited the track to the right. Jimmy Holley was as full pin, launched his bike over the jump (before "ghost riding" became all the rage) ran up to Flyin' Mike Brown and punched him straight in the face.

Not sure if that was a carry-over from the Regionals or a race-incident...

A brewhaha ensued...

Mike Brown went on to kill a pinball machine later in the weekend at the arcade just down the hill from the track...

Ahhhhh, the good old days.

I remember that race and that going on, also as they went down the track wasnt jim trying to stomp on his back brake ? what about the so called swimmin hole with the pure brown water, being from socal n livin by the beach we were a little freaked from the water but after a day or so of sweating from the 100+ heat i guess it wasnt that bad ! lol oh yea and the wood chips, there were a few broken collar bones that weekend from kids going over the bars as the track ended up with some serious kickers !
2/17/2010 8:49pm
The swimming hole was awsome! I'm pretty sure it was pure GREEN water as it was full of algae, but it was a bit nasty at first, that's for sure!

I traded emails with Doug Gere a few year's back and he said the swimming hole was long gone and the track died in the '80s.

That '76 race was my second trip down there as there was an NMA national there in '75 as well...back when the NMA was a national tour, not broken up into regions. The wood chips were interesting, but sure kept the dust down!

Cheers,

NMA Champ Paul Denis and his daughter Brianna at the Anaheim SX3 reunion with Team Swolen. Paul is holding a picture I took of him racing against Bruce Bunch and Todd Campbell.

The rider in the middle looks to be Kehoe, he has all the Yamaha helmet made by Yamaha, so i'd say it's 81?

I think your close. I'd say it's 80 Didn't Kehoe step up after Ponca 1979. He had won it twice by then. That number 19 in the middle looks like Paul. Is that you or is it Campbell? The rider on the right nearly looped it! Maybe Larry Brooks
