I was just curious the reason that a shop will charge the customer more for parts then what they pay . Is it simply a way to make more money? We don't over charge for tooling and materials in the machine trades ,what we pay the customer pays .

Yes, it's to make more money. Usually it's not too much, but it's something extra.

Most repair shops pay wholesale prices on parts. You walk into AutoZone for brake pads you may pay say $65 bucks. The same pads cost a repair shop $30 bucks but they sell them to the customer for $65. It's a way for shop to make some more money.

Well, it costs money to "order" the parts, it costs money to "receive" the parts,, it costs money to "receive and review the invoice" for the parts, it costs money to "prepare a check and pay" for the parts, it costs money for the office space for someone to do all that. And, you should make a profit, that's why you're in business.

It also costs money for parts to sit. For example any parts that have cores

And if the parts come in wrong, mechanics ready to install and the whole job is held up again.

I built our house thirty years ago. I had a friend at the builders merchants who would give me trade prices. I would get a written quote for the materials prior to order but inevitably the invoice would later arrive with a much higher price. I then had to go through each item on every invoice and get them to credit the difference. It was a PITA.

I asked why this always happened and was told that it was so builders could charge a markup to their clients, and if their customers ever asked to see the material prices the builder could show them the fake marked-up price.

Why does a beer cost $6 at the bar when you can get a 6 pack for $10 at the store?

So they can pay a very fine looking lady to bring it to my table and treat me like I'm the most important person in the world, right until she goes to the next table and does the same to the next customer. LOL

And if they have you already on file and your car needs brake pads again they can warranty them for free and get you to pay full price for another set

I worked for Ford as an advisor and then service manager. They mark everything up yes, nature of business. The thing that I saw between a few different shops I was a part of was this. If your dealership is privately owned you have a better shot at a legitimate business. Larger company owned dealerships that are part of a “group” ex: Autonation, Group1 so on so forth you really will get the ringer. They don’t have any wiggle room to work with people.

Wait what? C’mon man! Brake pads and rotors should be a warranty item! It’s not my fault they are warping and dug into, it was a rock!

NO, those are replacement item only. It's in the manual at what time interval you need to replace. It depends on the quality level you initially invest in what the service life is.

Funny story, short version. I took my son and some of his friends on a school event (volunteer parent driver).

7th graders I think. On the way back, we were hungry so we stopped for "food" at Hooters. Start them off right, right? It was during the time that they were being sued for discriminatory hiring so you guessed it, we got this big fat cow of a waitress. The kids were so disappointed! Every other waitress in the place a hottie, ours, not so much. We still laugh about that.

I do brakes on all my cars and trucks. Auto Zone brake pads are warranted. I replaced the rotors and pads, the pads were worn out and I go free pads. Rotors are like 3 years, pads are lifetime.
