I've lived in orlando for a long time and have seen bike week evolve into a harley poser fest over the last 10 years. back in the 70's/early 80's it was a good mix of motorcyclist types and was pretty fun, now its a waste. One of my friends dragged me over there the other day and as we walked around the speedway I was looking at the posers in black. 98% of them were wearing their uniform, black harley tees with leather chaps and engineer boots and there were no wear marks on the chaps and boots, most looked like new. They buy these 25K pcs of chit and pull them out twice a year, bike week and biketoberfest. many do not even ride to daytona, they trailer there and parade around town. a few you can tell are real riders and I respect that even though I cannot stand the harley thing.

why is it that the harley people get away with straight pipes that blow your ears out but if you have a loud sport bike or car the cops are all over you?
Because we are all fighting together for the ability to ride with loud motorcycles. We never go against eachother and try to make all motorcycles quiet. True story.

IMO...
It's the weather we have been having in the US (the cold fronts have been brutal this year ).
Who wants to make a track across the country in the snow/ice trailering bikes or even riding one for that matter.Hopefully things will pick up tomorrow and throughout the weekend as it starts to warm up.

This will be my 8th or 9th year in a row, Since 07 it has been getting smaller and smaller I noticed. This year a lot of people decided not to go because of the COLD, its no fun on a bike when its barley 60 during the day and then 30 at night....

Dave's right, Bike Week is dead. I live just north of Orlando and bike week over flows into Orlando, but not this year. It's really cold this week but I'm sure these guys plan the trip way in advance so I doubt that it's just the weather.

There used to be a go-cart track on top of a building in Daytona Beach, even had banked turns. Is it still there?

There's no cars because they were all recalled.

There's no riders because Erin Bates is interviewing them all.

Everybody else is busy with American Idol.

Here now. On the strip there are quit a few bikes. Logs are parked and just hanging out at the track. The lights are timed so you stop at every red for 5 minutes. Not any skin to be seen.

It's like the hardcore fans of pavement don't want anything to do with the new regime.

It's a shame, but it's not like it's over. From what I understand the 200 is
a big thing to those in Europe. Ducati want's it bad, something like 8 teams
showing up. John Hopkins (of motogp) is running, Ben Bostrum is back
on a Yamaha, Tommy Hayden rides his Rockstar Suzuki out of the same
Yoshimura garage Dungey does. Yates is back with Jordan's National Guard
Team. And rumor has someone running a 1125 Buell.

They say the only good thing about last year was the racing.
Hopefully, things will settle down and Roadracing in America will take off.

The races never seemed to be a big draw at bike week, anyways. More people come down here to ride up and down 17-92 on their fart cans and browse overpriced leather with harley logos, then to watch racing.

But yes,

American roadracing is the worst its ever been. I don't think the racing last year was good. Maybe their plan was to disgust Matt Maladin to the point that he didn't give a shit and stopped winning...then I guess it was success. Shut the lights off to make a closer finish? Check. Almost clean out riders by pulling out a pace car? check.

Hey, at least they dropped the pace car. IMO, the should just copy the rulebook from WSBK.

Good racing doesn't bring fans into a series, good promotion does. Look at flat track, hands down the best bike racing on the planet, it should be massively popular, but it's not. Supercross races could be 5 laps long, the results 90% of the time would be the same, and it's wildly popular in comparison to any other form of motorcycle racing.

What RR and FT are missing is a show. At the two SX's I went to this year my $40 ticket was satisfied by the end of opening ceremonies. At the one RR I've been to I'm 90% sure there was no such thing, and at a FT race its some old guy interviewing 2-3 riders. Woah! How exicting!!!

Your average Tom, Dick, and Harry don't care about racing, I think it's more about entertainment value. $75 to walk around Road America and see 1000ft of racetrack is a gigantic rip off. $40 to see an amazing opening ceremony, guys flying through the air and sometimes crashing hard is an excellent value. This is the same reason that SX will always be more popular than MX, you can't see everything at an MX event. Even people in the know are often left wondering who won. At the two MX races I went to last summer I can guarantee you I didn't know who finished 4th in both classes until after I got home. Sure the ticket prices are similar, but SX is a way better deal, even if it isn't as core. RR and MX events, to me, are mainly party events, that's their biggest draw.

Gunna cut myself off here, I need to go to work.

We used to go there for vacation when I was a kid in the 80's and I remember it being like a motorcycle RACING metropolis. The last time I was at bike week was 95 and it already seemed like a Harley tough guy contest.

Maybe the bikers have realised Harley's are more valuable as boat anchors, so have cashed in and havent replaced them yet.

So....maybe we ought to take another look at boardtrack racing with an aligator filled moat surrounding the track.

Which do you think creates more emergency room traffic, the Baja 1000 or Daytona Bike Week (non-racers only)?
