Respect for the guys who rode that crazy ass stuff at speed on bikes that took real skill to manhandle.

Other than the start straight and the first turn, I think the only time they grated the track was when it was built. That would have been many years before the race. They over watered the lower part and the upper area was sharp edged and dusty. The USGP motos were 45 minutes long. No A/C or semis to escape the heat. If you overshot the bottom of the downhill, you and the bike got caught in a chain link fence. Lackey had this misfortune which cost him a lot of points. I was glad to be there when Moates beat the euros. There was a lot of Patriotism back then..

The Euros kind of dominated up until the early 80s.

Lackey almost whooped them all on his nearly stock YZ he rode during his contract dispute one year!

What year was Sam Pose and the knobbly tire debacle. Thats what happens when you bring a car guy to MX.

Remember the race that they mounted a camera the size of a toaster on somebody?

Louie Franco was the rider from what I recall.

I was just a kid but got to go watch 82,83,84, and 85. Memories I will never forget.

I spun a lot of laps at Carlsbad, it wasn’t as rough as most of today’s tracks. It was literally a freeway compared to Southwick

The modern guys deserve the same respect.

Keep in mind I never stated anybody was faster than the other I dont play that game. I said when he went to HRC he got much better. I can appreciate your passion.

Ok, 100% agree.

I was a mechanic in 82, went to all the 500 nationals.
For sure Darrell was "on it" from the first race.
5-1-1-1-5 O.A. first five races was how he won the title.
Even on the year he was in it for the SX title until, again he got injured.
Danny on the whole year (82), by the second half, he was "on it", another level.
Getting injured that winter much worse than people understand took him off that level.

Winning the 500 USGP and also the ABC Superbiker's in 82  along with the Redbud 500 National and Mx/Trophy des nations win's seem's like a great year to me especially for back then.

Going back pretty far on this one, but 50K fans in the seats, $30K purse, and an electric atmosphere
