Ill preface this with saying I planned on buying a 250x but I ended up getting a really great deal on a regular yz250. Id rather not do the entire X conversion if I dont have to because the bike is really fresh. That being said Id like to make it more off road oriented engine wise. Im planning on a flywheel weight and possibly apex xc head. Any other suggestions?
Engine wise, the biggest immediate difference I noticed was when I put the vforce reeds on. I have the apex head and xc dome and it works great. The different domes absolutely change the characteristics, my buddy has same setup except with the SX dome and it hits nicely on the bottom. Pipes and silencers are kinda just personal preference imo, and what you ride. Good luck have fun I love mine.
Awesome, thank you sir.
I have the PC 2 pipe and spark arrestor, apex XC head, rad valve, timing retarded two degrees, GYTR flywheel. It’s still a race bike, but it picks up off the bottom better than a stock bike and runs cleaner.
Awesome ill keep those in mind. I put a gytr weight on it already and even just that helped a ton may mess with some timing next after a respring.

I spent a few years racing one offroad in A class. Most guys had skidplate, twinwall/fat bars or something tougher than stock, don’t skimp on brake pads, beef up your clutch, pegs too.
Low to mid port was a great mod for me. Apex head is nice. FWW. I really liked my Magura hydro clutch.
I pulled 2 deg of timing so it would run well on 91 pump.
I really liked my this combo:
- YZ stock compression with squish corrected
- YZ250X ECU
- YZ250X powervalve spring
- Flywheel weight.
It had good torque and was smooth.
I also found the Rekluse Torq Drive manual clutch pack was a great upgrade for technical riding. The clutch pull was reduced and the clutch was easier to modulate with the 12 Rekluse frictions vs the stock YZ 8 frictions.
Forgive me OP for asking in a question in your thread.
Has anyone had luck adding lights to their YZ? I'm looking to replace my KDX and the YZ250X seems to fit the bill. I know the easier way would be to pick up an Austrian bike, but I would prefer something a little more simple (Carb'd).
Anyway, I am looking to add some sort of lighting both to see and be seen. I am NOT expecting or looking for a race-ready night setup. My primary concern is safety. Namely, a headlight makes it easier for oncoming traffic to spot me. If I happen to be caught out in the woods around dusk (it happens), I would like to be able to make it back to the trailhead even if it is at a greatly reduced pace.
After some research, I see that RickyStator offers a 35W rreplacement. A Baja Designs Squadron Sport pulls 26W. In theory, the RickyStator, a rectifier, and some sort of battery should be enough to run the Baja Designs headlight and a basic LED tail light. Is anyone here running such a setup?
Hey man, everything you threw in the last end of your post is correct. I have a '23 250FX so little bit different scenario however, any lithium battery (Antigravity, Firepower, etc.) will be more than capable to run that setup on a YZ.
Thanks. I've converted my KDX to floating ground and added a battery so this isn't entirely new to me. Wanted someone to check my work more than anything. I'm not exactly thrilled about cluttering the air box with a battery, but that's a problem for later.
Right haha, it sucks that the battery takes up so much space for you guys on two smokers, I'm pretty spoiled with my airbox being up top. You'll enjoy having the lights though, good luck with that thing man!
I have run a setup like that on my YZ without issue.
It's very easy to mount a battery under the newer '22+ seats. The Antigravity 401 fits very nicely. I don't use the stator any longer, I just go with the battery.
How many hours do you get running the total loss setup?
With the stator it seems to go indefinitely. I've ran it all day during enduros.
With just the battery I honestly don't know the limit. I've never pushed it to see how long it will last, just ran it as needed then recharged before the next use. Probably about 30 minutes is as long as I've ran it continuously.
