Prime McGrath wouldn't survive in this current climate not forgetting that RC4 knocked this guy off years ago and still can't hold a flame to his skill level.

The 'King' of this sport-is Ricky Carmichael.
McGrath ain't shit compared to RC's accomplishments.

No, that's you friend.

MC elevated every single thing about the sport more than any rider before him. Clearly you were not around to witness what an absolute super star he was.

- It wasn't just his results, it was his new age BMX style, how he held himself, what his gear and bike looked like and how he methodically decimated the competition.

He was just such a bigger deal than anyone else that came before him

RC passed MCs 89 wins when he was 23. 150 is the real number. These guys get paid to win SX and MX.

Jett has 17 Motocross, 2 SuperMotocross and 1 Supercross wins, only 130 to go!

You have to start some where.

Jett has 25 mx win 1 sx win and is about 20 and 5 months old.

Ricky at 20 and 5 month old had.

26 mx wins and 0 sx wins.

In the future anything can happen.

But at the same age there careers are comparable.

You underestimate the effect 4 strokes had on the sport, 4 strokes have prolonged and given many "average" pros a career, it even the playing field greatly it continue to do so, in the 2 stroke era you really had to have a certain amount of insanity and crazy amount of belief to hit certain things on the track, today anyone can do it.

If you put any great sportsman into todays era in any profession you will find they would most likely do similar things as they did in their own era, McGrath for example if he was a rookie today he would have came out of a training facility and given all the opportunities that today's riders have.

This guy showed and taught the current riders how to ride SX.

I assume you're young I used to be the same and think anyone who is current is better than the past it's not really the case we saw that during the Dungey era, I laugh when I hear the LeBron and Jordan debate, there is no debate you have to be blind to believe LeBron is better than Jordan.

It goes the other way too, people who watch their idols during their teens and early 20's think that idol during that time cannot be beat, for example in my opinion RV was a better rider than RC(records aside) they are cut from the same cut of cloth the difference is RV was just more skilled.

I feel like most points have been made by now but as an "old guy" at 42 I still thought it was my duty to respond.

Comparing eras in any sport is tough. But in this case you just have to understand that MC was game-changing. The way he rode SX was levels above everyone before him and with him. So everyone after him benefits from what he did. If RC is the GOAT, it took him training at a ridiculous level, along with age helping him a little bit, to finally take MC down. MC was just an unreal natural talent at SX. And also, there was still plenty of competition back then. Realistically even today, there are still only so many guys that are going to win, even ones on established teams. So I don't see that as an argument. But to me racing in a 2stroke era is the big one. Watching those races, with those tracks it wasn't just auto-comboing every section, like it is today. You were punished for mistakes and rewarded for flawless riding. I think today's bike, data etc makes it easier for everyone to be good. Back in MC's era it took someone truly special and better to stand out and dominate the way he did.

I mentioned 3 specifically you just got red faced and forgot.

Competition is much different, culture is night and day different, and the equipment is not even comparable.

Dude, I'm pretty sure I remember MC was racing guys who were like working construction during the week give me break.

"Competition is much different, culture is night and day different, and the equipment is not even comparable."  Yes it is different, It was much harder back in MC's day. Bikes, bodies and equipment where not as reliable which makes his record even more impressive. Furthermore racing seams so factory onesided nowadays. I doubt we will ever see a true privateer win a SX like Ricky Ryan.

"McGraths record is not relevant, change my mind."  Go ride a 250 two stroke and a modern 450 for 20 +2 on a SX track and tell me what is easier/takes more skill?

"Dude, I'm pretty sure I remember MC was racing guys who were like working construction during the week give me break" FYI- It was not to long ago Christian Craig was working construction too.

"Why is McGrath "The King" in the Current Era?"  Aside from his wins he has done more for SX than anyone. MC brought SX into the mainstream and paved the way. He put on a show AKA SHOWTIME and changed SX. Who currently will do a freestyle trick/ nac nac or something other than a whip? MC is an great ambassador for our sport. Regardless of his wins he will always be the King of SX in the current era.

When was Windham, Tortelli, Villiuem, Lusk, Stanton etc working construction, Carmichael working construction? what companies did they work for? Christian Craig worked construction after his exit from racing due to injuries when he came back he had quit that job.

I'm  honestly  shocked that 10% voted not relevant.  I expected it to be less than 1%.  I guess those people  think it was  easier for McGrath for some reason?  I think the reason  he dominated in SX was due to the years he spent racing BMX.  Anyone  who voted not relevant  should read his book.

Good point. Tracks are very different today that cater to carrying speed and momentum. The faces and obstacles are made for today's technique.

Sips coffee…reads Harrow’s and Owen’s posts…laughs a little bit…then wonders…

“These guys really don’t know that MC raced into the 4 stroke era and helped develop the bike for Team Honda, do they?”

Answers himself…”Nah. Obviously, they don’t.” Laughing

It's not that complicated, he won ALL his SX championships on 2 strokes, he also won all his SX races on 2 strokes!

His 72 SX wins make him the King of SX, someday somebody will take his crown.

Riders now are fitness machines. If a Jeremy clone showed up tomorrow

MC’s Red Bull era…

Racing for fun, still competing but focused on helping Honda with developing the CRF, testing some AMAZING unobtanium…and just being himself.

Good Times.

Yeah good stuff. I definitely think the 72 wins is majorly affected by the fact that he did it as a trailblazer. That brings a certain level of difficulty or opposition. Didn't really consider that. Your point about MJ vs lebron made that make sense.

What I think is lost in this is that the two strokes and tracks were pushed to the limits of comfort then just like the four strokes are now. I think the 2 strokes and tracks then made for slower racing where the modern era speeds are just scary. Recall the Transworld MX days of using the radar gun and clocking guys doing like 60 through rollers. (yes its mx but its just an illustration)

I'd look at Chad Reed and what he did on a 2 stroke, his style has probably been the closest to McGraths especially in his early career and he could match RC's fitness (Daytona was proof of that multiple times). Even Stewart made a comment on his podcast awhile back about how good Reed was on a 250 2 stroke.

Promoter to track builder.   1995: These guys are the best in the world, let's challenge them. 2006: 250c guys are crashing, take it out.   2023: Top guy is making everyone look stupid, take it out.
