Was tearing down my 03 cr250 and found this on the bottom of the cdi box, I was able to trace this bike back to the original owner and was told it’s a hrc works cdi box on the bike. Pretty cool find thought I would share it with everyone.
Have you by chance ever run the stock CDI for comparison?
Either way, how does the bike run with that CDI?
To be honest I rode the bike once up my street and tore it down for a rebuild, I had just bought the bike and found this on disassembly and was able to locate the original owner when the bike was new and verified the cdi was added to the bike. I know it’s supposed to rev further then what the 03 already does but that’s about all I know about it at the moment.
That’s a super cool find! I’m wondering where the previous owner was able to source it. Was the bike originally in a good or rough shape?

Are there any other numbers or marking on the CDI?
Don’t remember, I’d have to pull it back off and look again, I don’t think it’s anything special besides it having some race team maps in it.
It’s looking sweet! I love the stock looking build, as I see you have the stock seat cover on.
Will you do anything to the engine considering you have a good CDI to start with?
I saw a 2004 CR250 for sale last summer in Santa Ana or Garden Grove, listing was all in Spanish and it wasn’t listed as a Honda, it had Gasgas and a bunch of keywords that didn’t make much sense.
It was listed for Two Hundred Twenty dollars!! I think the guy had no clue about dirtbikes and was trying to make room. The engine wasn’t starting and it looked like it might have stayed outside in the back yard for some times. It didn’t have a gas cap on too, but overall the bike looked low hours, pegs looked good, stock rear sprocket, stock seat cover wasn’t faded, clutch cover wasn’t really worn out.
when I saw that, I “harrassed” the guy with messages for like 3 days but he never saw them unfortunately then the following day it said “sold” I was so bummed!
Thanks man it’s been a work in progress, all titanium bolts, the carbon tank, clamps and Showa a kit forks. I still need a rear shock and a few other odds and ends. Iam still waiting on graphics and number plate but having a hard time getting ahold of the guy lately for them. As for the motor, I wanted to have some work done on the head and cylinder but still haven’t decided what Iam gonna do with it yet.
Are you sure that’s not just a used CDI from an ‘02 that was labeled to be in working order (“works”) by the salvage yard?
Yes, it’s been verified where and who it came from.
