Hey everyone, new to the forum so my apologies if this has been asked before (I tried searching). I'm doing the top end on my 2001 CR250 and my power valve is super gunky. Is there an easy way to clean it out?

Needs total disassembly and cleaning. I like to soak the parts in Chem-dip overnight, then you can use scotchbrite, razor blade, ect. Once you get the main carbon deposits off, I like to use my brass wire wheel on bench grinder. Probably replace that bearing ….Inspect all parts for wear, replace as needed… that looks like it has not been done in a long time, it’s much easier when done at regular intervals. You will likely be asking about this photo as well. IMG 1450

Last owner was running Benol, so I went with the same. Is there a better option?

Yes, synthetic.  Castor oil creates that mess.  Especially if the rider or the riding is slow.

There are lots of great synthetic  and synthetic blend oils out there nowadays.  Some of the more popular ones are K2, Super-M, Motul-800, Klotz R50, etc.   Even going to a castor blend like Klotz Super Techniplate or Maxima 927 would likely be much cleaner than Benol.

Top end probably has not been serviced in 20 years….Probably still ran decently…. Those 92-2001 Honda engines were stout💪

Another idea: oven cleaner. Used to clean my 2001 CR250R powervalve with oven cleaner and it worked great.

Wear gloves, use a toothbrush, scrub and rinse off quick, and repeat. You just want to control/minimize how long the cleaner is on the parts.

Keep that bike! Never should have sold mine.

If your power valve looks like that, your muffler core and packing probably looks the same.  Bike will run like brand new if you get that all cleaned out and fresh packed.

Any thoughts on 800 vs R50? I was looking for something cleaner than 927 and stuck between these two.

I've never tried R50 but it seems to be a great oil that many like.  I dont really care for the smell of Klotz oils.  It's a little over the top and seems like a cheesy additive.  I've been running 800 for a while now and it burns amazingly clean for how high of a flash point it has, which seems counterintuitive.  It's flash point is almost on castor oil level, so you'd expect it to be prone to loading up or spooge but it is quite clean burning.  It's performance and protection is well established.
