I think either revving or lugging is fine as long as you're not dragging the clutch. Most people who burn them out are either not adjusting them right or subconsciously pulling on it with their finger more than they think. Some people try and use a clutch to regulate power, I use the throttle and only clutch when I have to.
What’s the cost difference between trying a few sprocket sizes and a new ECU and custom tune?
No doubt cheaper by around $600 if you did 3 rear sprockets.
It all depends on
1. How serious you are with your bike/racing
2. Budget
I think folks spend way too much money on blinged out parts for these bikes trying to ‘fix’ what’s actually broken through technique or lack of seat time. Ride the bike a while and try some simple clicker and gearing changes before making big and expensive changes. Not that the ECU wouldn’t be great, but I’d always try simple stuff first

If you can't get on the podium for the plastic trophies your bike better at least look good, or have some things you can blame for not winning... "Dude, my bike just wouldn't work in stage 2 and the transition to stage 3 in the turn! Definitely wasn't my lack of skills or commitment in the turn!!"
Hey, so today I actually had a chance to test ECUs and maps with Twisted today!
Backstory, Monday I rode Pala and tried GET and Stock with a few maps. I liked the Smooth Linear the most but I’m still having a hard time taming the bike down to feel comfortable. Enjoying the bike, just not confident because of all the power if I whiskey.
Tuesday(Today), I started the day on GET because that’s where I ended the previous day. The GET map had low engine braking but still pretty torquey for me. I needed to ride it cautiously as I got on throttle still, I don’t have any content on what map is in there, just came with the bike. The only cool thing about the GET map was how free it rolled off throttle, but maybe almost so free that it didn’t load the front wheel enough for good traction.
So now I met Jamie from Twisted at GH and he had a Vortex I could demo. I told him how things were at Pala and how I felt tentative in the bike, I also mentioned that I was considering going to Chapperall to get a 48t.
So we demo’d the TD Vortex and the first map was so much easier for me to ride than all the other maps/ECUs. Coming off a 350, this is what I was looking for, more comfortable chassis, better suspension and now ridable power. I felt like I could roll on throttle sooner and smoother with the TD map, also I felt that this bike wouldn’t get away from as easy as the other maps.
We tried a few other tweaks on the maps and it’s really crazy how the ignition and fuel can change this thing into a different bike. Some things we tried I didn’t like because it would tighten up the chassis or even make the suspension feel more rigid. We kept going back to the first base map and I kept having more fun. I rode Jamie’s YZ450 also just to compare and still happy with the “rideable” map on my bike.
Just my 2cents on some hard square edge So Cal tracks. Also, I’ll confirm I’m not going to 48t. We will keep trying later this week at GH. Hope this info helps!
Who made your maps to GET or did you use some stock Factory maps?
I Think it is the Stock map from get he run.
I wrote in my post that I don’t know what map was installed or what the tuner was trying to do, so maybe it’s the stock map. Not bashing on GET, all I know is that it’s for yz450f. It does some things very well, but wasn’t what I was looking for.
These boxes are great, but it’s more about the tuners and what they install on the box. I’ll be around GH on Thursday and Friday if anyone is interested to try? We can put the box on your bike.
How do you like the YZ 450 compared to your 2023 KTM 350? I just got a 23 350 and curious of your thoughts on the new bike and the KYB suspension it comes with?
And this is why I said the vortex. The other thing people don’t realize is that you can sell the vortex when done for a good chunk. You can’t do that with sprockets. But if you are a rider who is serious or has the means. The best thing is the ECU to tune the bike to best suit your ability/style. Suspension and ECU and it’s a game changer
I like my plastic trophies with stock mapping, gearing, and suspension. Even if it is a washed up old guys slow class lol. I will say i liked the stock gearing and wouldnt go up a tooth in fear of losing too much of 2nd on starts. I did that on my honda and had to shift way to quick to 3rd n guys were gapping me during that shift. The yam pulled 2nd to the moon and all the way to the first turn at daytona.
Id take a Daytona trophy all day! It’s all about having fun. If stock bike is fun for someone, awesome! I enjoy tweaking and trying parts!
In the end, these bikes are freaking gooooood! Just try and remember what they were like 10 years ago, or even 15 ya know.
Not gonna fake the funk, part of it was there was 0 aftermarket support in March for these bikes lol. I typically cant leave well enough alone either. I do stand that i like stock gearing tho.
Saw youre famous on Instagram now! Lol
Make Daytona a bucketlist item like i did. Once i did it i realized it was one of the funnest more surreal feeling events ever. Ill keep going as long as I'm able. 21 n 22 on red, 23 on blue, 24 on green. Might try a different brand every year lol .Like, better than Lorettas and mini os. Arenacross in the MGM in 2003 was close tho!
This has me intrigued Joe! Like you, I have been on 350's for the past 5-6 years with a 21.5 Rockstar mixed in there. I sold the 450 because of the power but I honestly think that it handled better and was better suspended even with my exact same Cone Valve setup. I think that the 450 rode better bc I rode it in the lower RPMs and more efficiently. I even have people tell me I ride a 450 better than my 350 even though I feel faster and more in control on the 350. Haven't done a lap time comparison but I would imagine they are similar. I am not a big guy (6'1 165 lbs) or fast (+40
so not a rider who is your stereotypical 450 guy.
What this brings me to is going blue. I've ridden a few YZ 250F's and honestly I didn't like the power. Yes I know that's Blasphemy but the things just blast through the power to quickly for me and I struggle coming off the Austrian style power. So, I rode a few 18-22 YZ 450's and really liked everything about them. They were just too abrupt for me. I have been chomping at the bit for a Yamaha 350 but that seems unlikely. Maybe this is the ticket for me to go blue.
Yeah man, I've rode the Yamaha 250s but didn't think I'd live with the power in stock form. So then i'd go back down the road of a mod 250f and change the piston every 30hours.
So I took a gamble on this 450 because I like everything about it besides the power. I'll ride again tomorrow and see how well I can get the suspension set up.
You can find the Magic Map online, google it.
Sprocket 14-52 removes the jerky hit down low, is very strong and smooth.
I dont see a 2023 Magic Map on Google, theres one for 21-22'.
I'm considering the 14/52 gearing. I ran that on an old KTM and it did help free up the rear suspension a bit getting the taller countershaft sprocket on there.
Has anyone had a leak from behind the starter motor?

comments on that?
I would say it sums up this bike well.........for good and for bad. IMHO anyway.
Curious question. Remember Yamaha delivered the bike with the forks up in the clamps and suggested 7mm fork height and 97mm sag. I would love to know how many guys/gals actually tried this setting. ?
I tried it that fork height and sag a few times actually. Never really got along with it though. I have been all over the map in regard to fork height, sag, clickers, etc. I landed on 3mm to 4mm on the forks, and ~103mm sag with basically stock clickers.
My buddy started with that setting and worked his way down in the clamps and the sag to about the same as you. I started with about 2 mm in the clamps and 105 mm of sag. It felt pretty great for me right away. Was more comfortable than my 22 GG 350 with KYB's in about half of a lap. I think it feels just as light in the corners and in the air as the 350. You can barely feel the weight difference when putting it on the stand, but not really. Compared to the last 450's i rode, 20 KTM and 21.5 Husky, this bike feels much lighter pretty much everywhere even though its probably 10+ lbs heavier than those bikes. With a new guts seat foam the comfort on this thing is fantastic.
How is the clutch pull as far as resistance for the hydraulic kit versus the cable?
Does anyone know if arc makes a replacement lever for the hydraulic setup? Haven't been able to get them to answer the phone.
Thanks
It’s just a ktm brembo unit so I’m sure it’s the same.
Has anyone put a pro taper sela on these new style fork guards successfully? Can’t seem to make mine work. Thinking I wasted the oem fork guards, and my decals lol.
Is this a taunt?
Stop messing with that pro taper turd n put on a double button tamer!
About 5min.....he talks about sag setting - yeh - i was that guy

I understand the reasoning behind his 97mm sag thoughts, but I’ve tried 98 and thought it was much too high in the rear for me. I raised the forks to counter that but still had a tough time. I’m feeling best at 103mm and forks up in clamps 1-2mm.
the other idea is to go to a lower profile rear tire or a slightly longer link to lower the ride height and run 96-98mm sag….
I have been running 95-98 sag but rear shock is shortened by 1,2mm and front forks are all the way down. Shortening rear shock works great at rough sand tracks but kills turning on hard pack so going to 95mm sag on hardpack helps.
Another blown 23 YZ450...what's the deal??
