SMX the concept, the hype and the racing

I think we just got a glimpse of the potential for this sport to really become greater than the sum of its parts. Like it or not the concept of a playoff/series ending championship with big bucks on the line where we can see it with our naked eyes rather than in a riders contract is a big deal imho. Having the sport build to a crescendo rather than end the summer with somewhat of a fizzle is a huge step in the right direction. Yeah it needs fine tuning and tweaking but to me this was a huge shot in the arm for dirt bike racing and a glimpse of the future. I loved it and I hope they continue to consolidate the racing into something that becomes a unified single championship at the end of the year with serious race purses and a huge championship payout.

100% agree. I've never seen guys going so hard at the end of the year. Last race of the year is usually a snooze fest.

Playoffs work, plain and simple. That's why almost all sports and racing have them.

As a long time NASCAR fan, the racing has never been better since they started the Chase format.

Like you  said, they can tweek a few things, but this is the future.

The SX and MX championships should never be unified! They need to be kept separated for a number of reasons, and throwing away 50 years of tradition is near the top of that list. The SMX playoffs were fantastic but suggesting that the SX and MX series should be combined makes zero sense.

The points system used ruined the series. The sport does not need Gimmicks to succeed. If the fans can fall for the gimmick of triple points at the final race to make it a winner take all between the top 2 or 3 in points why not make it 10 times the points and all 20 riders on the gate would be in the winner take all final race?

Let's hope this leads to a bit more variation in SX track builds, and venues.

These last three races were a great showcase as to how to make things different/better, for the fans and the riders as they have to figure out set ups.

I have said it before that SX has outgrown regular stadiums and need motor speedways so they can build tracks better suited to the new 4 stroke era.

It’s clear why whe see better ”indoor” racing now at theese kind of tracks compared to regular sx tracks that gets beat to shit and the riders just trying to survive instead of racing.

Based off all the discussions I've had with the powers that be, there are no intentions or want to go to a single "unified" championship. The history of the sport and the two major existing series (Supercross and Pro Motocross) won't be interrupted.

I don’t love it, there were too many races as is and it will be lucky to not completely derail MXON efforts in the future.

I prefer championship drama to happen naturally, rather than artificially ginned up every single season. This type of thing really devalued NASCAR since they’ve implemented it, in my view.

But, the tracks were better than I thought, the riders were incentivized and I’m very happy to see them get paid.

It was awesome!!!!!!! Most exciting race in a long time! With that much $$$ on the line, the riders seemed to be riding a little harder than usual. 😂 it was great! 💯 💯 BTW Kaw stole the show this weekend with the bikes and box van. Amazing!

So why not ruin both championships, they can both be 17 rounds.

The second last round double points, and the last round triple points.

But the kicker is that the outdoors series is smack in the middle of the Indoors series.

The winner of the it all can be the Grand National Circuscross Champion. GNCC!

I really enjoyed the last three races and the hype and racing. I figured it would be gone when the WSX is gone but I hope they keep the SMX. Its Better than the Monster cup with threes races and two really good tracks and then Chicago which was ok but maybe they can do it better if it goes back next year. The LA Coliseum track was fantastic. Cool

I understand that at the moment no one wants to walk away from tradition but at some point I think it should be looked at in some form.

Since we've lost a 12th MX race. Why not have it as part of the SMX series

1x full on SX track

1x full on MX track

1x hybrid style track

Have each moto pay points. Give bonus points for a clean sweep at each event to avoid a rider thinking it's worth settling for a 1-2 finish.

Maybe only double and triple the points for the bonus points for a clean sweep.

10 bonus for clean sweep in round 1

20 bonus in round 2

30 bonus in round 3

Not sure if that keeps the points race alive more or less than current system. Could tweak it. But my idea is mostly centred around trying to get riders to do everything for a higher finish each moto and to add a bit of extra incentive to grab a 1-1.

It was awesome and the racing was some of the best all year. Worked out the best it could have all things considered. And guys got paid too. Well deserved.

It was the same hype when monster cup ran it’s first year to. Give this a year or two and it will be looked at the same way.
