Pat - That is a sweet build. I let a buddy of mine ride my 1989 CR250 just so I could try out his new CR125 in 1990......I liked it so much, I almost didn't give it back to him! That's not only because it was a great bike, but that is how much the 89 CR250 sucked....

I put my backgrounds on! I like how they turned out.

The number is kind of like a tribute to my dad.

Here's my dad's old '90 CR500. That's me sitting on my brand new '94 PW50. Good times!

Wow your project is turning out nice! That's cool it has some additional meaning to it. Are you still going to use the PW number plate on there? I'd have a hard time riding it after all that work!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm a bit reluctant to ride it. Part of me wants it to be a garage queen and part of me thinks that it would be pointless to do all of this work only to let it sit there. But, I can't even stand to see dust on this thing. Every time I go out to the garage, I wipe it down.

I really want to use the PW number plate, but it's hard to get it to fit right. The bolt hole is slightly higher than the one on my triple clamps, which makes it difficult to make a bracket. I don't want to cut it or modify it because it's the real deal. So, I think I'll save it for my next restoration.

The one I have on this bike looks enough like the PW one that I'm happy with it.

That PW plate works perfect on 1995 and newer CRs. I ran into that with my 93. You could make 95 or 96 clamps work on your 1990. You would have to space the steering stem for the smaller head tube and use newer forks, front wheel and brake. I think you are definitely better off leaving it as it is. I wonder if some day when all the parts for these older bikes are used up if they will go way up in value. If you think they will, I would put it up and leave it in perfect condition....but it really would be cool to ride it! There is something awesome about passing new 450s on a 20 year old two stroke.

Yeah, that's a lot of stuff for a number plate! I agree, I'm better off leaving it as is. It'll be on the next one.

Update!

Got the left side decal. New pegs too.

Don't mind the gap between the seat and the rear fender, the seat isn't bolted down yet.

Vintage stickers!

New lever, repainted clutch perch, new clutch cable, and new dust cover.

Thanks, guys! I started it up last night. It sounds bitchin. Had fuel leaks, though. One at the petcock and another at the float bowl. Not sure how that happened. Got race gas all over the painted motor. It dulled the paint a little bit, but Maxima SC1 seems to bring it back. It bummed me out a little. Do any of you guys know if you can anodize the engine cases without messing with the tolerances? That would be much better than paint.

bummer. I don't think you can annodize them with good results because they are castings. It would look all diffent shades of black. Most of the annodized pieces you see are forged. I looked into it for the hubs on my bike. I think the factory just paints or powdercoats the motor and hubs. What kind of paint did you use on the motor? I need to figure out the right way to paint the motor on my 87 CR.

I don't recall the brand name. It was semigloss black stuff from an automotive paint supplier.

On some of the other parts I have painted, I used SEM "Trim Black", which has kind of a satin finish and looks really nice (look at the clutch perch shot above). Very high quality stuff! I wish I had painted the cases with it. You can get it in spray cans or shoot it through an HVLP gun.

I figured out the leak issues, too. There was a bad o-ring in the fuel valve and the float bowl gasket was bad. My fault. The petcock issue is understandable, but I definitely should have replaced the float bowl gasket. Freshman restoration mistake I guess!

So I don't have to worry about high temp paint then?

As per Lee's (thepipe) recommendation.. I used brake caliper paint on my cases, it's high temp, matte but still somewhat shiny, and seems super tough...dries amazingly fast too!

You really need to use automotive grade catalyzed finishes on your resto projects. You can get a cheapo detail gun from Harbor Freight that will work for home projects for next to nothing. No need to by a $400.00 Sata to paint a motor. I can soak my engine parts in all kinds of solvents and have zero issues. If you must have some aerosol stuff for semi gloss black parts Sem Products as mentioned above does make a few good rattle cans.

What process do you use, newmann (as far as prep, primer, base, clear, etc)? We do have a Sata gun, that's what I painted my frame with.

Anyway, the paint still looks really good.

Started it again today after replacing all the seals related to the gas tank and carb. No leaks! Sounds like a factory bike.
