is this normal and any advice?

What did you get for a bike? Just take it slow and safe. Rome wasn't built in a day. Have fun

Hold your line, DON'T try to swerve and get out of others way.  Don't ride above your ability.  Concentrate on improving your braking and cornering first.  Jumps come later.

Enjoy.

The two above are classics.

I've only ridden in the South West in the last 20 years, and only occasionally elsewhere before then, but 90% of people are good dudes.

A few are impatient or assholes or both, like with anything, but if it's a practice day and they can't give a beginner some space then they're the dicks, not you. Fast guys find their way past just fine 👍

Nice user name. i'd say have fun, enjoy, don't worry about others, hold your line, don't ride over your head, ride in beginning class, take a whole session at the beginning to slow down and learn the track.

This, this right here is my point in the lappers thread. I am butt ass dog ugly slow and I know it, I always been told hold my line and the fast guys know how and will pass you. I don’t even know where the fast line is to know I’m in it so how the hell do I get out of the fast line I may make it worse trying, maybe this if how the lappers feel about the fast pros. What if he moved as Chase was passing causing a tangle dammed if you do dammed if you don’t.

Just hold your line, whatever line you're in

I'm in the same boat as you.  Slow as shit and don't know the fast line.  I always assume the fast line is the one that is dug in deepest and try to avoid it since I'm so slow and don't want to block others.

LOL...if you're slow, the fast line is not where you are.  Fast guys will find their way around you.  Except for Barcia or Friese.  Don't ride with them.  Ever.

Haha, I know to stay out of their way.  I haven't rode in years, still a year out or so from riding again, but I will avoid the fast line!

I have seen guys just starting out be allowed out in the woman+kid practice around these parts. Maybe ask when you sign in if that’s a possibility?

Hahaha, I probably should.  I'd get smoked by them too more than likely.  I'm 45 and coming off a total knee replacement surgery in April of 2022.  I'll take the jokes for being slow!

As others have said, hold your line so other riders can predict where you are going, if you exit a corner on the left, stay on the left for the next jump, other riders will pass you on the right, and vice versa.

Most importantly, no matter how fast or slow you ride, enjoy yourself!

Heh no shit this is actually right about where I belong, but I’m ok with that I’m 54 and on a vet special 350sx just having fun. When I clear the whole tabletop beside parking at Swan MX I feel like like Jett did going undefeated!

Guys, here's a hot tip if you don't know where the fast line is: stay all the way to the left or all the way to the right and stay there. That means inside line on some corners and outside line on others. Sometimes you might be in the fast line, but at least you'll be predictable, and that's all a fast guy coming up from behind needs. As long as he can see where you are and where you're going, you'll be fine.

Noob, welcome to the sport. I hope you love riding at the track!

You want to conquer the 450 then keep it and make it your mission.  Love it, marry it, cherish it.
You want to have a blast and charge corners, rev your bike Barcia style,  then get a 250F they are so fast these days.   I have both.  They are both fun in different ways but 250F is a good notch more fun.  A modded out 250F to your specs is a thing of beauty.  A ripper

What took you so long? Complications? I was able to ride in 3 months. I have said before that you could time me with a sundial so maybe I'm not saying much here.

Don’t cross the track to exit. Know where you’ll be exiting and set up for it way ahead of time to be on the proper side of the track to simply pull off. Never, absolutely never on a jump or on the back side of a jump do you move over. Have fun!

Didn't really have complications, I just still haven't really fully recovered.  My leg is still a little smaller from the atrophy, still hurts a little sometimes going up and down stairs.  Not really sure, I have the range of motion down.  Three months sounds quick for a having a knee replaced!  I wish I was like that!
