I just got a 2023 sxf 450, it seems to sputter and puff/pop a little on decel in 1st and 2nd gear. Riding back to the truck after a moto in 2nd left off the gas, the bike tends to sputter and puff/pop. It only has 4 hours on it… any idea what this could be ??
not broken in? ECU needing to be flashed?

Give it 10 hours the motors are quite tight just like the chassis is stiff and after 10 hours the motor will lossen up and stop popping.

The mapping is a bit jerky herky on the bottom and the motor is tight,  I stalled quite a bit and I also think the funky gearing makes the above worse.

It does free up a bit, I was lucky since I had a vortex from previous bike and got it remapped. Runs loads better and with a torque map, I am thinking about 49t down from 50 that is down from 51 stock.

Maybe a new fuel filter incase it's a bit of manufacturing debris as well.

I’m coming off a Japanese bike with head pipe gaskets and bolts instead of springs and splooge and I noticed if I don’t high temp silicone my head pipe like bitd with 2Ts I get decel pop I used to just richen the fuel screw a cunt hair and all would be good these new fangled Austrian bikes have me scratching my head and repeating the mantra “It’s a KTM thing” almost everytime I go out.  I hate how I can’t find neutral unless I use my hand….deepen the fucking neutral indent in the shift star a tad more. They are too afraid of a false neutral from 1st to 2nd - as thorough anybody uses 1st gear on a 450 anyway unless they are too lazy to lift up rather than just stomp down.  But the filter is super easy to get too……….so there’s that

I’ve been looking into maybe grabbing a vortex myself, they say they solve all the problems.

Ok thanks I’ll give it atleast 10 hours before digging more into ECU and TPS settings.

Yep.  Decel pop is 99% of the time an exhaust leak caused event.  You can mess with TPS, aftermarket ECU all day long and they can mask it, but best cure is just making sure the system is sealed at the joints and exhaust outlet.

I've noticed all the bikes with finger follower style valve trains are incredibly loud. Almost sounds like theres a ticking noise due to a problem inside the motor but that's how they sound. I wear ear plugs when I ride. Highly recommend

What would be the best way to test for exhaust leaks ??

Pull the exhaust off and look for black streaking at the joints and the exhaust flange. That would indicate a leak. Ensure the surface is clean and when you put it back together make sure it is seated squarely .  I always use a small amount of high temp RVT silicone on the header and antisieze on the mid pipe and can.

If the clutch is engaged it doesn’t do the sputtering/popping. Is that still possible ?

Decel popping is your motorbike telling you to stay on the gas longer. LOL
