Honda special tools

Who here that has a CRF 450 (im working on a '08) knows what exactly the special tool is for the cam chain tightener?? Is there something one can work around or do something different if you don't have that tool?

It is a little tool that holds the tensioner open so you do not have to remove the whole tensioner mechanism. But the tool is like $80 bucks. It is worth it if you do alot of top ends but you can just remove the tensioner and get the job done..

Yamaha tensioners come with a holder. If you can get your hands on one maybe you could try it on a honda, or even make one. A scewdriver as mentioned above works well to.

I use a screwdriver to back it out, then the yamaha holder to keep it in place.

Just take the entire thing out.If you dont want to just use the screwdriver like mentioned before.

If you want you might check with MOTION-PRO to see if they have something that will work. Also there is a company in So Cal called KOWA-SEIKA that's parent company makes the special tools for most of the Japanese factories

Thanks for the info, the bike isnt mine plus I dont own a Honda so this won't be a common proceedure for me thus I didn't really want to buy the tool. All input appreciated.

Well, I've got that beat.......but now how about the flywheel holder to reinstall it, do you need it?? I'm thinking it is to just hold the flywheel so you can torque the retaining nut without spinning the engine over. Any ideas?

You are correct, put it in gear and push down on the rear brake.

i work at a honda shop and if theres one near you and theyre cool like us they will prolly just let you borrow it for the night if you ask em

You don't even have to take the tensioner out. Use a skinny flat blade screwdriver like said above. Turn it clockwise until it stops and put just a little torque on it. It has a detent that will hold it there disengaged until you stick the driver back in and release it.
