I've seen a bunch of European footage of hill climb competitions, and I can't get over how if you don't make it to the top there's a very good chance that your bike is toast as it tumbles violently towards the bottom of the hill!
I for one couldn't afford that particular aspect of cycliing!

All due respect, but there's nothing like some retarded, built-to-the-tits, 1000cc+ on nitro BMX framed bike shredding a fully chained steel-paddle tire all the way to the top of mount Everest..
Definitely takes some sack.
and thanks for the post!
I remember going over there as a kid on my XR80 and sitting at the top of some of the worst hills watching guys on YZ250s, TM360s, IT465sthe new XRs in the mid 80s. Those guys would show up in full riding gear and totally trash some great bikes. My dad always rode TT500s and his buds did too. He would just sit up on the top and turn the gas and almost idle all the way to the top.
I rode up those hills on XR80s and later on CR125s. I remember going back there in '98 when I got my first YZ400 thinking, this thing should be a breeze there. I was terrified. I remember going down hills thinking, "why and I here." Haven't been back since. It takes big stones, a lot of skill, and more practice to do that regularly.
