It’s just a thin cable or string that is spring loaded and attached to a multiturn potentiometer. Front tire would just shred it and continue on its merry way I would think if it somehow broke next the housing and that little bit of string was dangling from the fork lug.
Fork tampon?
Rides says fork is doing XYZ. Overpaid engineer says that's impossible. It has to be doing ZXY because the book says so.
Rider says fork is doing XYZ. Engineer says fork is doing ZXY just look at the data, we'll find another overpaid monkey to ride the bike!

Used to be a plaque on the wall in the mission control center in Houston that said “In God we trust. All others must bring data.”
Your exchange reminded me of it.
AP is self admittedly a horrible test rider. Not surprising that they're running these during the motos.
I doubt they use the data prove the rider is a idiot...lol. More so to see how changes/adjustments effect things. Also a really good way to record and replicate whatever makes the rider happy.
Some riders don't make good test riders, they may be fast, but they don't give good feedback about what the bike is doing.
F1 performance is 90% car 10% driver, they have used data for decades, motocross is 90% rider, 10% bike, I'm surprised nobody is data logging the rider!
