Only $10 for all 2026 SX, MX, and SMX series.
Alessi and Pourcel were the last riders to have permanent 3 digit career number. They were able to keep them because they were grandfathered in when the rule was changed from what I remember.
Post Millville - Kitchen into the top 10 overall, Vialle next? Potential of Vohland before the season end?
It would be great if they would let us know on if SMX is included because that will change all these numbers drastically with the point variations each round.

Time to start dropping your thoughts or Rumors for a National Number for Tom Vialle, I was trying to think of all variations of his normal 128, but they are all taken.
12 - Mclerath
18 - Jett
28 - Craig
21 - Anderson
81 and 82 - just don't see it
Maybe he just goes lowest possible??? Let me know what you are thinking!
I got nothing,,, that said, I couldn't help but think he reminded me of Rick Ryan when he won Daytona with his setup at Southwick. Bright red (orange) pants, white jersey, all covered in sand. Just thought it was kind of cool.
Why does the casual fan care who has what numbers?
Permanent numbers are far better for identifying who is who on the track.
Trying to build some sort of order into a numbering system doesn’t work.

that way they know who the top riders are. Weird to explain why #11 is in the LCQ, and why #96 is winning all of the races.
I think the biggest issue with the numbering system is that it is a mixed bag, some numbers are permanent and some are semi-reflective of their overall position..
Either give everyone 1-99 a permanent number, and 100-999 be for rookies/not enough points, or have everyone run what the earned the year before.
Also maybe require the champions to choose a top-19 career number? And only champions can have top-19 numbers.
I would be fine with that, might even be able to get away with 1-9 (havent thought about it enough to know if it would cover)
I don't think it would work - especially since there have been so many different champs recently.
Currently:
2 - Cooper Webb
3 - Eli Tomac
4 - Available
5 - Available?
6 - Jeremy Martin
7 - Aaron Plessinger
8 - Available
9 - Adam Cianciarulo
Eligible:
Jett Lawrence
Jason Anderson
Ken Roczen
Dean Wilson
Chase Sexton
Though maybe the guys who earn a career number as 250 Motocross champions probably shouldn't be eligible for the single-digit numbers. That would clear Martin, Plessinger and Cianciarulo.
So the single digits could be reserved/required for 450 champs. 10-19 could be reserved/required for 250 champs.
active 250 mx champs without a 450 championship:
Dean Wilson
Jeremy Martin
Aaron Plessinger
Adam Cianciarulo
Jett Lawrence
While 250MX may be full National Championship it does make some sense for 450MX to be considered the premier class and only champs in 450SX and 450MX are eligible for single digit numbers. I hear you on the 10-19 as 250MX champs but it feels wrong for some reason.
FWIW, I count 24 different riders who have won a 250 MX championship since 1990. 12 (or 50%) of them have gone on to win a 450 (SX or MX) championship. Plus Jett Lawrence looks like he will probably win one, but can't count until he does. 11 of them have not won a 450 championship. (Plessinger, Cianciarulo and Jeremy Martin still have a chance to make it to the list.)
So a lot of guys win 250 MX championships, but never do it in 450. So it would seem fine to me that you still have to "earn" that single digit with a 450 championship.
Been saying this for years. Single digits should be reserved for 450 mx/sx champions.
They don't do it in NASCAR, Formula 1, MotoGP, etc...those motorsports seem to be doing just fine.
2-9 are already reserved for past champions.
Do those sport have a partial permanent and partial earned numbering system, or do they stick with one format
Correct, but 2-99 are also reserved for past champions, so it destroys any significance to 2-9
For this to work, first you have to have separate numbering for 250 and 450 class. Then the first problem you run into is riders who change classes for whatever reason - they can't keep the same number so they have to switch. Second - how do you differentiate between supercross and motocross? Same numbers or separate? Third - your favourite rider has a different number every single year (in almost all cases). How do you identify them on the track without referring back to the national number list for the current year?
Actually the best example of how the "ordered" numbers are a pain is the MXdN. Try watching that without referring to list of rider numbers.
Whenever you try to build sense into the numbering system there are always situations that don't fit with the original intent and you end up with riders running numbers that don't make sense anyway.
Permanent numbers avoid all that and they have the big advantage that individual riders are easily identifiable throughout their career, no matter what class they are in and what series they are racing. You can show me a series of first turn photos from the last couple of years with a bunch of riders and I can tell you off the top of my head who most of the top 10-20 riders are.
Well only past champions can choose 2-9, but they can choose to keep their other permanent number. And what if you have more than 8 past champions? Start of next year you'll have Tomac, Sexton, Anderson, Webb, Ferrandis, Cianciarulo, Plessinger and probably Jett who are all past champions, that's just in 450's. Then add Hunter (probably), and Jeremy Martin, plus Baggett and Dungey who I assume are still holding onto their respective numbers. That's 12.
i think it's annoying that a guy like chisolm has had number 11 for like 15 years now lol.
like before that it was ezra lusk. i want someone good to have that number again.
Pit Row
As others have mentioned, if you split 450 2-9 and 250 10-19 it's much more likely to work out to have enough numbers.
So if Hunter wins outdoors, he could pick #10 and carry that with him to his 450 career, he would remain #10 until he won a 450 championship, at which point he would have to pick 2-9 (whatevers available).
I believe the riders should be able to choose what ever number they want to run.
Chiz absolutely earned that number. And has been good enough to retain it for many years. Chiz is very good.
I think everyone should just run whatever they want, with single digits reserved for 450 champions. So if it’s implemented at the end of this year, you would need the normal 25 points to hold your number. Any rider not doing so, that number becomes available. Then you just go down the line of total 450 points accumulated and let them pick their number or keep their current one, then do the same for the 250 guys. If a top rider wants to run a triple digit their whole career like Cairoli did, so be it.

@ML512 or @-MAVERICK- have you heard on the SMX points counting towards this yet? Figured they may have talked about it over the break.

At this moment I do believe the SMX points will count towards earning a national number. That said, I don't think a final decision has been made.
ML might have a better answer.
Clinton Fowler showed it in a rulebook somewhere that SMX points will count...so if that's the case you can throw out any tracker because of the double and triple points that will be awarded.
I was thinking the same thing if they do count them, it will shake everything up tremendously.
What place they finish in points in the previous year makes perfect sense!
Using a Nascar type permanent number system makes no sense.
Who benefits from a permanent number?
Does Jett sell more jerseys became he is #18
Does Dean Wilson sell more jerseys because he is Number #15 ?
They tried it, it didn't work. Time to move on.
But why are we supposed to care who got "second" last year. Because of the multiple classes and series, 8 different people could have gotten "second". 450SX, 450MX, 450SMX, 250WSX, 250ESX, 250MX, 250SMX and 450250EWSMXCombined.
Fair point, personally I would like them to run the earned number from each series (Like they do with #1) but I doubt that would ever happen so running the earned number for the whole year combined is the next best thing, Like they did in the 1980’s/1990's. On the flip side who cares what someone's permanent number is and How does it make sense for the guys that earn one in the next couple year's and they are all taken, Congrats great job pick your new permanent number in the 30's
