I just finished watching "Little Faus, Big Halsy" for the fifteenth time and can't believe what a great movie this is. If you have never seen it or even heard of it, check it out. Robert Redford is the big star in the movie and the movie is all about vintage motocross and roadracing.

Another one with some bike stuff at the same time was "Sometimes A Great Notion." Paul Newman, Henry Fonda and some other recognizable players. About an independent logging family in the northwest caught up in a strike they didn't recognize. There's an mx with old CZ's and Husky on a beach. Decent flick and it's always great to see some old school moto even if it's not the main theme.
It wasn't vintage at the time.

that washed cars in Cool Hand Luke?
For me, and every guy in High School at the time, when we graduated, we were going

Let's not forget "The Great Escape" with Steve McQueen (bud Edkins) attempting to jump the wire into Switzerland.
What was that movie with loads of young kids on 80's racing?
"You're A Good Sport, Charlie Brown" is about the Peanuts gang getting into motocross, and it's the only Snoopy film that ever won an Emmy.
"The Dirt Bike Kid" with Peter Billingsley (Raphie from "A Christmas Story") is cute.
And don't forget there's "Spetters," which is a Dutch film about motocross racing.

Plot: California landlord Max Devlin is knocked down by a bus and wakes up in Hell. There he meets Barney Satin who tells him he will be sent to Level Four unless he can return and convince three innocent souls to sell their souls in his place. Equipped with supernatural powers, Devlin goes back, setting his sights on three victims – Stella Summers, whom he gives the ability to sing and allows her to fulfill her dream of becoming a pop star; nerdy genius Nerve Nordlinger whom he allows to become a championship motocross rider; and a kid who decides he wants Devlin as his adopted father. Unfortunately for Devlin’s two month deadline, the victims, having achieved their goals, prove somewhat difficult to get to sign their contracts.

i was there for that mechanic shoot. it was done in the back of indian dunes.
jn roberts, dave and bud ekins were all there.
i think bud was the man in charge, and jn rode the bike.
the bike had a small explosive device on board, which was triggered when the highly sophisticated switch (cut off pieces of hacksaw blades, wired to an explosive in the air box) made contact with the metal of the handlebars. the idea was that when the blade contacted the metal on the bars, it would complete the circuit and blow the thing up.
the plan was for jn to get on the bike behind a dummy and ride it towards the cliff. he wore a harness connected to a cable. when the cable ran out, it yanked jn off the bike, letting the dummy ride it off the cliff.
nice idea, but there were "issues". the bike was really hard to ride with the dummy on board. jn went up a small hill to turn around and head down. right at about the apex of the uphill side, the husky sputtered and died. he'd forgotten to turn on the gas.
it was a simple tip-over when jn lost his balance while turning, and in those few milliseconds, every member of the crew immediately hit the ground, waiting for the bike (and jn) to blow up.
it was deadly quiet. you could hear jn and the bike hit the soft ground.
then.....nothing. he got up, apologized for forgetting about the petcock, we restarted and got the shot. the bike went off the cliff, hit bottom, augered in...and then....nothing. the explosive rigging probably never worked in the first place.
a second bike was brought to the bottom of the cliff. they dug a little pit, buried some explosives and blew it up.
another movie, "earthquake" had richard roundtree supposedly doing a 360 on a motorcycle, riding on a board track. we bought the "revolution" plans from a guy in canada who was doing it in stunt shows with a snowmobile. it was built and mounted on a flat bed truck and hauled to a backlot at universal studios.
bud ekins tried it. crashed. i tried it and still have a collarbone that works better as an internal barometer than a collarbone. a couple of other guys tried it. nobody could get all the way around. everyone was catapulted/spit out at the very top (12 o'clock on a watch). wasn't pretty. if you were lucky, the 30 foot fall ended when you hit a porta-pit below. bud ekins missed the padding completely on his attempt and landed in the hard dirt.
if you watch the earthquake movie closely, you can see a guy ride in. then they cut to RR's face, and back to a guy riding out (past the 12 o'clock position). they sacrificed the first guy (the stunt world at the time wasn't very sympathetic), then simply winched the second guy up (and upside down) and cut him loose.
we found out a few weeks later that the snowmobile guy had made a "slight" mistake on the drawings he sent us. the camber of the board track was exactly opposite of what it should have been, which was why everyone hit high nooh and ejected.
after that one, i went back to being a magazine guy. while the letters to the editor could sometimes be brutal, they didn't hurt nearly as much as playing stuntman.

occasionally somebody posts something that triggers a memory so i spew it out.
not surprisingly, the near-death ones, like those two, tend to stick better than old hangtown dirt during practice.
makes for a nice ride for me when i get to dust off old memories ...kinda like pulling a tear-off.
DC - got me thinking - wasn't there a flick where guys are off-roading baja-style
and they go into a time warp ?
Also, wasn't there a street bike type action flick with Lawrence Fishburne and one of the
troubled Baldwin bros, that featured some modern-day Supercross ?

Bu the way, the flick I'm writing (and it's GONNA be a blockbuster!!!!)

playing myself if i can't get Morgan Freeman to play me.

will play the evil British guy that's always pissing me off.
