Our newest episode of Winners Take Y'all goes 80s retro with Keith Turpin. Keith was one of the first 2 riders signed by Kawasaki Team Green, had a support deal with Honda and won a 125 SX championship on a Suzuki. Lost the next year by 1 point to Ronnie Tichenor. Moved up to the 250 class, broke his femur and retired. All by the age of 19.

Ohh man, I remember those days going to the races watching him, along with Sean Dukes, Todd Neal, Mark Crozier, Danny Payne just to name a few. Ga had some fast boys back in the 80s-90s

Turpin would lap myself and most of the 100 class on his KX80. Then we’d watch Billy Liles, also on a Kawasaki, or Barry Higgins on a Maico lay waste to the Pro classes. Good times.
I just left Ga. The weather is perfect the AtL traffic not. I remember Keith. I was laughing today remembering my Dutch Grandma she said Keit for Keith. Go play with Keit he was a crazy older kid. Haha. I like the 332 # I run 532 Marty Smith ran 522 I think there all similar & catchy numbers.
Trying to remember exactly what yesr probably around 2010 -- Keith was preparing for Loretta's i think. anyway Keith was hauling ass on a Ktm (might have been a 350) at ICR (since closed sand-track south of Atl) and crashed hard. i believe he tore his shoulder up pretty badly. that's the thing about household named world-class riders -- regional pros seem very fast at your local track until one of these guys shows up. even outside of their prime. so much speed and talent. btw, Keith's a great guy as well.

Dude was so fast, but damn he was beat up by the time he turned pro.
Thinking he might have ruptured his spleen, and his hand was pretty mangled up when it got caught in a spinning sprocket in a first turn crash. Seems like he had to have 2 fingers reattached, but don't trust my memory like I once did.
And there were other broken bones. Just pretty beat up, but could still rip.

Thanks for checking it out. Tunnel Hill was epic along with Calhoun. They would draw some talent when they paid the big bucks. Pretty sure Kenny Kizzar threw hands with Danny Payne after a moto when cash was on the line.
Kizzar hit Payne on the helmet and his hand swelled up he could barely ride at muddy creek the next day.
I think he got into, and still is big in dirt track car racing.
probably not as unique in that world as he was in moto.
His antics could fill another thread, and he would be an interesting interview if he Han remember the late 80's.
An example:
He once tried to jump a double at their track in Cleveland, TN.
Only problem was there was a light wire across the track. He figured he would just jump OVER IT.
he clipped it with his back tire and dropped 25' like a rock.
