Stupid question. But interested in reading any stories where you were able to get your hands on a specific or special part which caused you to build or ride a model/brand bike you wouldn’t have just so you can use it?
I have a carbon airbox that I’d love to build a Carmichael factory kx around, but will never be able to find the rest of the parts so it will just sit in a insulated box until I die then probably get thrown away
Yes….built my 88 RM250 because of a Pro Circuit pipe…
I also have a bunch of 2000-2001 Yz250 parts for a build, but only if I find said bike in very good original condition… No more roach restorations for me…
The 88 rm250 always baffles me as a bike...so much different from the 87 and the 89 was all new as well. I'll bet parts are really hard to get for it

DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
building a 97 yz250 because of the ti subframe
Many parts are 1 year only, very hard to find certain parts….
Yep.
saw a set of a-kit Showa suspension on here
and a 2006 Cr250r for sale at the same time, married the two with a few cool parts and built a mc tribute bike.
the last 250 two stroke to Holeshot a 450 main!
Building one currently for my father, all because of a sweet gas tank I saw
All cool stuff guys. Yz133 that’s what made me think of this question. Saw some a-kit suspension and for a moment I had dreams of buying them and then finding a bike for them. 1983yz cool tank. What bike?
Laughed out loud
Fantic 240.
will be similar to the below when done, with some tweaks
If I could find an 04 white brother carbon pro i’d build an rc replica
That’s nice👍
Wanted to build a 450 moto bike before they did.
I have a set of all pink plastic for a 92 KX125/250 that I hoped to use one day. It's sitting in my shop boxed and lonely. The $5000 bill to aquire and restore a suitable donor bike scares me away
Beta is sweet!!!!! is a lot of that custom (pipe guard)? or is there aftermarket stuff available?
After building the Beta I found out a couple things. Never do a build during a pandemic.
They do have some nice stuff for the Beta, but nothing close what KTM ‘s have available.

Not a dumb question at all!!
My Dad had a Maico coffin tank hanging in our garage growing up that was leftover from his earlier days racing prior to me learning to ride and race myself. I always thought it was really cool looking and should be a show piece of some sort.On a whim I asked a guy at work who's son had some Maico's back in the day if he still had any laying around. I thought it might just be cool to fix one up for display- even if it didn't actually run. The guy put me in touch with his son and $200 later I had two barnyard-find 1974.5 GP Maicos and a truckload of parts that even included two more pristine coffin tanks... Try getting a deal like that today!! And the guy I bought them from basically thought I had paid him $200 for a truckload of junk.
I had absolutely no idea that vintage motocross was even a thing (this was late 90's in the early internet days). In my quest for parts I come across the fact that there is vintage motocross- and it was thriving pretty well by the late 90's. I take my Dad to a race and we go nuts seeing all these Maicos, Bultacos, CZ's, Husqvarnas, etc all back to life and out on a motocross track again... And the smell of Castrol in your nostrils was enough to hook you alone... We were in after that...!!!
So YES- That Maico tank of my Dad's went back on a bike a raced again! Not only did one part make me decide to build a bike- but it brought my Dad out of MX-retirement and got him back out on a track racing again. Between the nights in the workshop restoring them and the many states traveled, tracks visited and great people met- including some lifelong friends- it gave us another whole chapter to our lives that have always included motocross...
So I'd say if you have a special part like that laying around- definitely go for it and out it to use!
Kinda I was buying the new 04 cr125 anyway. To get the power up. I ordered a SRS pipe& carbon silencer, srs piston& the head with all the cool fins. The importer went out of buisness. I never got the parts.
