Rahal bumped out, 30 yrs after dad got bumped in that cool MGD car

Foyt got fast cars , Legge got herself in , she drives gt in imsa , been 20 yr I guess since she been in a indycar . I’ve watched her since the crash at road America in the kink.

it will be a good race, no need for a gimmick wing to pass. Foyt had a good quote on F1

Looked like they were doing 242mph going into turn 1. Pretty cool!

Memorial Day weekend officially starts the summer AND has 3 iconic car races: Monaco, Coca-Cola 600, Indy 500.  Even if these aren’t necessarily the best venues for their leagues it’s still a special weekend for those who enjoy them all.  Of course the AMA Nationals kick-off as well.  Favorite weekend of the year.

I say it all the time, it's my favorite day of the year. You can't beat the atmosphere of being at the track, it's truly feels like something important. I wouldn't miss it for the world. This year will be a great one, the qualifying was so exhilarating to watch even from home.

This is from a few years back, but man it really just hits hard every time I watch it.

only watched a little, but seeing the dash cams in qualifying was hair raising...  the little green dashed bar at the bottom of the screen indicating throttle was full the entire time, not sure I saw anybody lift off the gas?!

If you lift you end up like Rahal!

It always blows my mind seeing those cars circulate an enclosed race course at 230mph avg. And to think the cars were 5-10mpg faster and much less safer in the 90s. Insane.

Really look forward to this race every year. Indy car itself is starting to make a comeback in popularity again , which is awesome. I'm rooting for Rossi or McLachlan

The old CART series were incredible to watch. I was so buried in just MX I just didn't follow a lot of the races back then......but YouTube has been great for catching up on decades of racing.

Stefan Wilson was hurt in a practice crash today and they are now saying he is out of Sunday’s race. Be interesting to see who they put in the car.

Yeah,  crash with Legge. Do they have a back up, or can they fix the car?

Sounds like Legge’s car can be repaired. Wilson’s team has a backup ready but they need a driver now. Doubt it would be Rahal as he is a Honda driver and the other team is Chevy. If the team pulled the car then Rahal would be first alternate. Maybe RLL sends some money their way to pull their entry to get Rahal in. Will be interesting to see what happens.

I love the 500. In the mid 60’s my dad would take us kids to the Orange Show in San Bernardino to watch it on a big screen in an Auditorium. I believe  I’ve watch every single Indy race since those early days. It is my must see race each year. The emotion involved for the winners is unmatched in any other Motorsport event. I’d love to see one of AJ’s drivers win or Marco Andretti. And I always root for the women drivers

I was with Reynard Racing Cars back in the CART days.

I was at Fontana in '97 when Mauricio Gugelmin did his 242.333 lap during practice in PacWest's Reynard 97I.

CART used to put out a timing sheet that showed trap speed and it was something like 254 mph on the back straight.

Since it was during practice, that lap was not recognized as the lap record there, but Gugelmin did 240.942 during qualifying.

That held up till 2000, when Gil DeFerran went 241.248 in a Reynard 2KI. Those cars were incredible to watch.

The lap record at Indy is still held by a Reynard from 1996 when Arie Luyendyk did 239.260 in practice.

No closed-course race cars were faster than those CART cars in 1995-2002

When they went to the 'Handford Device' rear wing to try to slow them down, it resulted in pack racing that was insane to watch.

I was at Michigan speedway and put my wife on the back of a Honda cub and went down to the inside of turn 1 to watch the start.

It was so scary that I could only watch about 10 laps and I had to go back to the transporter to watch on the monitors.

Graham Rahal is jumping ship to drive the Dreyer & Reimbold car after Stefan Wilson's crash.

Honda must not be very happy about that!

Were you at Texas Motor Speedway in 2001 when we were there for the CART race?

The cars were too fast for the track and drivers were nearly blacking out from the g-forces so they cancelled the race. I saw Michael Andretti get out of the car after practice and he was staggering around like a drunken sailor.

It got ugly when we were packing up to leave. The fans were NOT impressed!

The trouble was that when we tested there in the spring, the cars were running high-downforce aero for short ovals and CART pronounced the track ok for the race.

Then when we went back with a super-speedway aero package with special parts we developed in our Indy wind-tunnel, the speeds were crazy fast and that was that!

CART officials came to us  on Sunday morning and asked if we had any 1-1/2" gurneys on the truck to fit the rear wings to try to put enough drag on to slow them down, and we just laughed. "Why would we have those?"

I saw a guy with a sign:

That Is interesting about Rahal. I’m surprised they made it all work out. There has to be lots of agreements between sponsors and manufacturers to make it all work.

I  was working the crash janitor truck in turn 3.

It was insane. Yes, there were a lot of pissed off fans, but they just didn't understand how bad it was.

We went over to the pits after a session, and I think it was Franchitti's crew that said he was getting physically ill.

Too damned dangerous to try that.

Went Brack crashed an Indy car at 2, a guy found his brake pedal in the bleachers, and he wasn't going near that fast.

That’s a crazy story. I did a tour  of the track after the 97 sx. I was shocked that the corners hv very little degree.  Like how r they going in at 245-250+ mph ?  The Indy 500 is the biggest race in the world by far. The winners for the rest of there life’s r introduced as Indy 500 winner then there name. Even qualifiing they put it on the line 100%.  Any Indy car race beats pro sx or mx by a lot.

1&2 is 20 degrees, 3-4 is 24.

Plenty steep when you're walking on it.

Oh man Indy , I forgot you were in on all that. I remember you mentioning that before. I think I told you about what happened to me in the early 90's at PIR in Portland ( Vanport ).

Thursday night MX, hot summer night , I pull off from practice and am pitted pretty far out on the pavement. Sitting there resting and this whole Target team of like 10 dudes came over and started talking to me. They were racing there that weekend.

One guy that had a bunch to say seemed to be the leader of the group asked a bunch of questions. I asked who their driver was , and that guy said " I'm the driver for the team " ( I literally knew nothing about Indy car/ Cart stuff at all )  I asked his name and he said Paul Tracy. I told him I thought I had heard his name before. Haha.....had no idea who he was until many years later.

Long story short , they hung out and watched some of the MX races that night. Kind of a cool experience I had.
