Strange thread....

If the organizers of Bercy want J. Stewart to fill their stadium, they will pay what it takes as long as it makes financial sense. All good.

J. Stewart wants $200K to bring his bikes, entourage and everything else so he can race for two nights. The organizers are happy, so again all good.

the Fans will EXPECT James to be HUGELY dominant. As far as he goes, they will want to see a demonstration of his superiority -the race will go on from 2nd back.

What does it matter which other AMA riders go over? Who exactly is going to beat him?

With the greatest of respect nobody in Europe is very familiar with anybody but the top 3 or 4 guys in each AMA class anyway. So ANY American rider(s) will do, and if he gets beat by European (or better yet French) riders that the crowd DO know better yet.

If you need proof ....look at how much he won by in these videos nobody was even close and he didn't even look like he was riding that hard ...... in the second video look at how many fans are really excited at his win...... not really a reaction to his win and not many standing up and cheering because there was no action as a disclaimer Im not hating on James nor his money to start but I really thing the promoters put on a "Watch James spank a bunch of riders clinic" they (the fans) won't be happy to come back next year if this happens again. That's because they got what they can't see in eurpoe and that is a chance to see James race but if it is like this next year the fans won't be back not because it was a bad experience at all anytime seeing James ride is a treat but to see a replay of last year will garner a lot less attendence.

I've just watched the Bercy U-tube vids. It's as you said - not much reaction to James winning.

But you are missing the point!

As I said the race was always going to be for second and going by the crowds reaction they really did enjoy that.

The crowd came to see a "world beating" James Stewart - tick the box.
The crowd came to see good racing (for 2nd place) - tick the box.
The crowd came to see French guys beating americans - tick the box.

So the SHOW was a hit!

The crowd really don't CARE how much James Stewart gets paid - only you guys.

Yes but will the same crowd be there next year to see that same uneven beating? I'll bet they have a lower turnout next year than this year.

Check out this qoute in regards to Tiger Woods appearance fee in Dubai..."Woods picked up $400,000 US for the win. But victory or not, he was already assured a $3 million appearance fee. " If I were James I would be pressing for a Dubai Supercross!!!

It would be interesting to see how much he is being paid to race Super X in Brisvegas

I feel he would get his 200k and that would mean the promoters would have to sell at least another 3000 tickets at $100 to cover all costs and turn a profit on Lil Jimmy

If you check the website I think they have done that already so it is a win win

Most riders who receive a salary get start money as a base salary and bonuses on top /plus endorsements.

The majority of the elite athletes the world over receive appearance money why should one of the most dangerous be left out.

So in your opinion, he should not take what he can get or is offered, but should tell the promoter "No, you don't need to pay me that, I will take less so you can pay others"

Right?

You do the same on your job?
Not take a raise so your boss can hire someone else?
I seriously doubt the amount of start money Bubba recieved is not what was originally offered, but what he negotiated/demanded. I'm sure the overall percentage of promoter money he received is probably much greater than MC, Emig, RC, etc. ever demanded.

To Bubba, it's all about the Benjamins, the Bling and bein a Playa.

So what?

you think Nick Wey is there because he wants to get beat by french guys?

They're not going to lose any spectators next year if they only pay James again. JS races here in America pretty much every weekend and we are used to that. He makes it to Paris, once a year? They're definitely going to keep buying up tickets to watch him come over there and race.

Sorry, I don't buy that concept. There is a gate drop, and also a checkered flag.

As someone who doesn't support unregulated capitalism, that is messed up. Stewart accepting that is hurting his other competitors financially. That's exactly what goes on in the stock market. Those rich SOB's stocks are soaring while the jobless rate in America is skyrocketing.
Another way of looking at it would be if they cant get a big name like Stewart then they may not get a big enough crowd to pay the remaining riders 20K.
SX isn't a union job.

SX attendance should be down quite a bit this year according to your logic. If he smokes everyone at Reeds race in OZ will attendance be down there next year too?

You are missing the point, I never said there was anything wrong with James getting such a high appearance fee the problem is that there is not enough left to bring in someone that can even race with him.

Why doesn't he just show up and ride by himself? Looks to me that is basically what the promoters are doing. Im not hating on James getting the money im hating on the promoters for bringing ONE rider to a race especially in france they won't be happy to come back next year if this is the case.

Let's say they had a pool of a million bucks to pay appearance dollars.

They give Stewie 250,000. They set up the show with another rider in the same league and give him 250,000..........oh, yeah...guess there is no other rider in the same league.

Sorry I brought it up.

I am not sure if you are talking to me about missing your point but you are the one that brought up attendance. I just went with it.

If the promoters and riders made money then they did their job. Did the fans get the show they expected? If so then they will be back and probably more than this year. That word of mouth thing will play into it.

Who's gonna sell tickets?
Not that guy. I've never seen a movie with him in it.

I guess I'm not star struck or suckered into watching movies becasue some specific guy is in it.

How much does Travis Pastrana get paid to appear/compete? If James is pulling this kind of cash, certainly Travis pulls much, much more. He is far more well known by John Q Public.

No one's on his case rippin him up and down for making a living for the risk & personality factor. What is there less of a risk of permanent injury?

You guys are really hating on someone from our sport making the best of a situation he is in because he dedicated his life to get there. Are you saying that a good paycheck in a sport where you retire in most cases before 30, is selfish, when you and your family have been building this career since 4years old? GET REAL!!

Dammit! FOR THE LAST TIME.....I never said any degrading to James about his asking price for start money I think he can ask whatever he wants and since he is the best in the world and dedicated his life to the sport, he deserves to get as much as he can.

My point was directed at the promoters that agree to give almost all the apperance money they have to get ONE rider even if it is James they got ONE huge draw kind of rider they easily could've had 4 if it was dispensed a little more logically. (Reed, RV, CP, KW).....the list could go on and on

Hold on guys, you can not possibly blame this on James.... If Xavier sees this he could certainly explain it better, but it goes back to the promoter paying top Americans in the late eighties good money, but then a Frenchman came along and beat them, so he got the most money. That started to trim the amount of top Americans they could afford.

Then when Jeremy came along and was simply a force of nature, he commanded even more money than JMB and the promoters were glad to pay it, but then he got beat for the '97 title by Jeff Emig, who then asked for champion's level money.... It just kept climbing.

Then along comes another America-beating French rider -- DV12 -- and he commands X amount, but Jeremy is still champion, and then here comes Ricky... It got to the point where the promoter could not afford the King of Supercross, the King of Bercy (DV) and the future GOAT.

So they tried a new tack: The U.S.-versus-France-versus-the-Rest of the World on 250Fs, and it was cool, but it's not what the people wanted: they wanted to see the supercross rider in the world. So they want back to paying top dollar for the top talent.

So now you have reigning champ James Stewart, two-time champ Chad Reed, French national hero Christophe Pourcel, Team USA heroes Villopoto and Dungey, world champions like Cairoli...

That's the market now to get top riders to an international race like Bercy: Pick one of those guys and see what you have left in the budget, then drop down the ladder and see where you end up. They try real hard, but they have a real challenge there every year. It's not like the MXoN, where the guys race for pride and country.

And then you have a race like the Montreal Supercross.

Held in a real stadium with a full size track. They hardly pay anything in start money and manage to sell the thing out most every year.

Not three nights in a row mind you, but it holds quite a few more people. So it's probably got the gate revenue of an extra night with the additional capacity over Bercy. Maybe two nights, I have no idea how many people the stadium @ Bercy holds.

I wonder how many top pros would show up to race it if they offered Stewart level start money as prize money for the event? Oh right.... why would they waste dough like that when they can sell the place out with a bunch of Canadians and also ran Americans.

Some of you also need to know that the Bercy promoters don't put the riders up in a dump and have them fend for themselves, they get top quality first class treatment including food and they cover travel expenses.
These riders may only be making $5k or $10k (which is a lot of money to show up, no matter how you look at it) or whatever to race, but on top of that they get a free all expenses paid trip to Paris, France

I'd rather see the top 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 US riders race and fight for the win, than watch any one of the top 3 run away with it. Pay those 7 guys $10,000 each to get there, then pay $80,000 to win, $30,000 for second, and $20,000 for 3rd. You'll see the best race of the year!!!

And it's a race that 99.99% of the people on this board have neither the skill or the balls to participate in.

Again, it's really not all the complicated to understand why the keyboard jockey's don't like supercross.
