I have been excited for SMX to come down the road from me to Charlotte and I think that it will draw in a ton of casual fans especially in such a motorsports area with a ton of guys that ride also in this area.
Christian Craig's injury got me thinking about this, he had some pretty good injuries but I would think he would be back on the bike before the SMX rounds in September. Not sure about Mookies timeline but he is probably in the same boat along with Ferrandis, Mcadoo, Shimoda, Forkner, and Musquin that people want to see race that may or may not be ready in September but will or have missed all or most of SX and all or some MX.
Its sort of tricky to sort through the wording but it sounds to me like there is no way for someone that has missed some or all of the MX or SX rounds to get any sort of wild card berth or anything. Yes I understand that the series is to emphasize the combined skill and longevity needed to compete in SX and MX. But at the end of the day this is entertainment (especially these 3 rounds with the unique venues in different locations). People want to see the biggest names racing and that is what sells tickets. Not to mention the 250 guys that are out are some of the small few that have made the class interesting against the Lawrence brothers.
God forbid anyone else gets hurt before the end of SX or beginning of MX but what if one of the huge names ends up missing MX but is recovered in September do we tell them that they cant race?

as long as one of their seasons is decent, they should qualify. Last year Cooper was 12h combined, and he sat out all of MX and finished 7th in Supercross.
If you sit out half of supercross, and all of motocross, I dont think you really deserve to go.
I thought if you win a race you automatically qualified, but it just gets you into the LCQ for the 21st and 22nd spots?
I didn't realize they re-set positions 20-30 at each SuperMotocross round and have an LCQ at each one.
The true answer here is they themselves don’t know wtf is going on.
No, I don't think that's the truth.
They haven't done the greatest job of laying out the information for us to understand, but with some help I was able to piece most/all of it together a couple weeks ago:

I don't understand why they aren't giving a brief outline of the playoff format during the TV broadcast every week. They have plenty of down time to fill.

Specifically for Craig, he has already banked 150 points. That should be enough to get him into the LCQ races. A 450 rider probably needs about 200 points to ensure he qualifies for the main events. So if he can make it back for 2 or 3 rounds of MX that should be enough to get him to 200+ points.
I do think it's is the truth. You hear guys like a-ray saying he will race the smx lcq.
The lcq is only ment to have 10 riders. And some1 like aray will be lucky to be top 30.
Yeah I was thinking this as well, atleast with Craig that has had a successful year up to this point. Malcom I don't think he would in his case unless he is able to come back for a couple MX rounds.
It would be cool if they had some cool graphics towards the end of the MX season that gave us an idea of the guys that are in the playoffs, who needs what kind of result to get in kind of like how the NFL does towards the end of the season.
Oh, you mean the RIDERS don't know. Yes, I would agree with that.
Though one correction to your comment. The LCQ will be 10 riders, plus any riders who won an SX or MX who didn't finish top-30 in points. Though there aren't likely to be many of those.
I thought you meant Feld/MXSports/SMX doesn't know. My apologies.
So because ARay thinks he’ll be top 30 combined means the promoters don’t know how their series works?
Yeah, Steve Kornacki is an NBC guy. They need to bring him on!
hopefully they will, it would be a pretty huge failure on their part to have a new championship and keep the fans in the dark on whose invited.
I have followed moto for decades and am still confused on how it works. They originally said top 20 in points. Now if you win a race you are in, or still have to qualify to be in? And why is all the money just for these three rounds? I think it is laying out more than the other series. And the first two are qualifiers and la is a final?
Read the post up above, it's all explained. Or check out the website: https://supermotocross.com/about-smx/
If you are outside the top 30 in combined points but have won a main event or a motocross overall win, you will be allowed to race the LCQ. All of the additional prize money added this year was spread out between the SX, MX and SMX purse but the SMX playoffs will have the largest pay day. There are two playoff rounds and then the final.
- Top 20 in points automatically qualify for the main events. Other riders can qualify for the LCQ's.
- Pretty much from the beginning I think I've heard that main event winners will qualify for the playoffs. Simply winning a main event (or MX overall) will get you into the LCQ, but doesn't guarantee you a spot in the main event unless you are top-20 points.
- I believe the purse money for all rounds has increased this year. But the most money is going to the playoff champion. This is because they want to incentivize all riders to race as much as possible throughout the year, and then participate in the playoffs. The hope is that there will be a large TV audience.
- "I think it is laying out more than the other series." What does that mean?
- LA is the "final" only in that it is the final race of the playoffs, but the champion is determined by most playoff points. Riders earn playoff points 4 times: They get 1X points entering playoffs based on their position in the final regular season point standings. They get 1X points for their result in first round. They get 2X points for their result in second round. They get 3X points for their result in third round. Because of the 3X points in the final round, I think it will be pretty unlikely that any rider will have the championship clinched before the final round.
