This post is more about the format (sprint enduro) than the video (I just posted it for some context...me racing 40+ A, where I finished 7th of 16)...but I raced a Sprint Enduro a couple weeks ago (which happened to be a west coast ISDE qualifier) and I can't say enough about how just plan fun this format is.
If you haven't tried one, go do it! Usually short "sprint" special test (these tests were between 7 and 11 minutes for me)...plenty of rest time between tests...and usually ride the test multiple times (so you can learn some lines)...way less dust than traditional desert racing (because riders are spaced out 15-30 seconds on the tests) even though it was hero dirt on this day. You only start the race on your minute (no need to start each test on your minute...so it's simple math). It was just a really good time.
This one was a 20 mile loop with 4 special tests...we did that loop 3 times for a total of 12 special tests (LOI/Pro did 4 loops, A/B did 3 loops, and C did 2 loops). With wet sand, I ended the day wanting more!
Like I said, if you haven't tried one...give it a go!
Man, those look fun!!! Been wanting to try one for a while.
I'm planning to do my first Sprint Enduro May 7th in Mancelona, Michigan which happens to be the first one of this year's D-14 season. Looking forward to it!
I hope there are more of these events in your area, because I am moving to SLC in a few weeks. There are plenty of them in Michigan and the east coast, but I wasn't sure how many there are in Utah. Glad to hear the event was fun.

started doing them a couple years ago - love them! definitely keen on doing more & more of these!
There is 1 this weekend in northern Nevada Reno area
I’ve done a couple, great race format! Really good if you’re not in great shape, I was able to fake it/ hang on for 18-20 minutes for each loop, then collapse/recover for 20 minutes, then do it again. 6 loop’s total. Looking forward to more
The Wildhorse! Great event with MRANN and D36. I’m bummed I have to miss it this year.
There are two off-road race series here in Utah. UMORA (Utah Motorcycle Off-Road Racing Association) and USRA (Utah Sportsman Racing Association). Both do a combination of hare and hound, hare scramble, GP, and Sprint Enduro formats. They play nice with each other and don't hold races on the same weekend. Races are held from Southern Idaho to Mesquite Nevada, and everywhere in between.
UMORA is an AMA series (so you'd need an ama card), and hosts two National Hare and Hounds every summer.
Plus, within about 5 or 6 hour drive of Salt Lake City you can hit races hosted by MRAN (Motorcycle Racing Association of Nevada) and SIDRA (Southwestern Idaho Desert Racing Association)...and another series in Wyoming (Not sure what its called)...and a few Rounds of the Rocky Mountain Enduro Circuit, and WORCs and BITD. The Idaho City 100 is a ISDE qualifier, and a race everyone raves about (but I've never been able to race it, unfortunately...either my schedule never works out, or the spots have filled up and I haven't gotten in).
So much off-road racing around here. But the terrain will be VERY different from what you've been racing in Michigan.
The Sprint Enduro is getting to be a very popular format. As I posted before we just held the Alligator Sprint Enduro a couple weeks ago and it was a huge hit with everyone that came. We limit pre entry to 300 racers and we ended up with 346 people signed up. Not bad for a Thursday race.
IDC100 hasn't been an ISDE qualifier since 2016 - still an awesome race, I'm planning to go this year.
I raced the Knoll's sprint, other than the high wind Friday, what as awesome weekend. I ended up 2nd OA, had a ton of fun, wish I would have used a scoop tire, it was deep out there! Hopefully the Knights keep putting it on this event, I'll have it on my calendar qualifier or not.
I didn't know that about IDC? Good to know...
And you were hauling at that race...after the race my dad walked up with his phone to show me a video...he says "check out this dude...he never lets off the gas!". And it was a video of you on test one...going VERY fast! Congrats on that finish!
The Knights are great people! I hope they continue hosting it as well. It was a blast!
Ha, thank you. Only a big fish in a small pond. It’s fun to go to the ISDE and see the worlds best (Josep Garcia), who goes about 10% faster than me! If you don’t already, follow Josep on Instagram, he’s fun to watch. I’m excited to go to Argentina this fall. This will be my 5th ISDE, but my first in South America.
Also, let’s see this clip 😃 if you can get it from your dad, shoot me a PM or email, nferderer@gmail.com
Dam, looks fun! All I've ever done was regular motocross or fairgrounds racing. This sprint enduro stuff looks so cool. I gotta get to one some day
I appreciate the info and will look up those organizations when I get settled in, hopefully by summer.
Wish we had some more of these in the NW.
Maybe a dumb question, but is really the only way to pull off promoting one of these to have a Transponder scoring system?
You could do it manually if you had some people who were really good at writing numbers and times.
Pit Row
Asking my dad to email me anything...well...I don't think he knows what email is (I was shocked he knew how to use the video camera on his phone lol). He lives 100 miles from me, but next time I see him, I"ll see if I can grab that video.
And few things are more impressive to me that watching the best enduro riders in the world do their thing...it's absolutely incredible!
Good luck this year! I'll be following the entire race from my computer.
The first few enduros I did about 10 years ago, didn't use transponders. We taped a piece of card board to our front fender with a grid for each test (two columns)...Synchronize the clocks at the beginning and end of every test...when we start a test, they'd write down the time...and when we finished it they'd write down the time...and then spend 3 days manually calculating each test. lol
So its very much doable without the transponder scoring system...just much more labor intensive.
Right on! and welcome to Utah...where exactly are you going to be living?
Thanks for the welcome! I am working in Magna, so I rented a place in West Jordan for now. Having never been to SLC, I did not want to buy a place until I get more familiar with the area. There is a very slight chance I will make the open practice on April 14th at Bunker Hill.
Sprint enduros are lame as fuck.
But went out and swept the Wild Pony family sprint enduro in Toulon, NV
Conditions were perfect, but a little cold
I remember racing the Alligator when it was old school time keeping… Us MX”era had to follow a guy that knew what he was doing on our row… it sucked, we would burn checks …. Penalty for going too fast! Screw that…. Changing over to Sprint format probably saved Enduro racing…. The last alligator I raced was Sprint format, it was way better…
Whaaaaa, I came out to a format I don't understand, it sucked
It was the natural progression with people getting dumber every 5 years.
Even national format is going downhill because people aren't smart enough to wait til the flipclock matches their numberplate before taking off.
I understood the format somewhat and I get there was some mathematical skills involved in calculating the mileage, mph and route sheet timing. But from what remember the numbers were dwindling with that format. So continue on until it’s dead or change to grow that segment of racing? But seriously GFYS…
Its really not that complicated...
Even riding possibles with just an ODO and a watch.
Ride to .1 before the possible.
check the time.
if you're late. go.
If you're early. wait.
Sometimes going slow is even harder than going fast, at the D37 Not-so-tuff-enuff they always had a 4mph section in the deepest nastiest sand lol
The complicated part for many is understanding how to figure out where the possibles are.
Bummed I missed Knolls this year, it looked like a really fun course. Past years it kinda looked like a wide open desert race across whooped out double track. Looks like they made a more interesting course this time.
They're literally given to you.
