You can take them off. Even says something about it in the little booklet that comes with the SG-12s

I took mine off and shaved down the front lip of the sole on a belt sander, mucho bettero

Looking at these a little more, I think they’ve overhauled the sole design. The SG12 is (as far as I can tell) stitchdown construction on the sole. The new boot is advertised as a Goodyear welt. There are a few pros and cons to each construction, but the most noticeable difference for riders will probably be the exterior dimensions. A Goodyear welt construction will have a smaller footprint for an equivalent size of stitchdown. It looks like the sg22 is substantially similar to the 12 but with less bulk around the foot.

I Just tried sidi atojo after a few pairs of sg12 but didn't like them.
