A couple of kids later and a few other hobbies to keep me busy... but I came across something I haven't built before and felt this bike was tired and in route to an early grave. Lets make the world a better place one two stroke at a time.
Here is what I started with.

Got her home and went ahead and took it most of the way down.

Found the airbox to be cracked and broken if anyone can help me find one that would be wonderful!

Cleaned the engine, nothing too crazy yet just some light scrubbing.

Spent some time on the swingarm and got it looking decent I think.

Next up will be frame and subframe. I will repost again when I have cool stuff to show you guys!
Nice platform to start with. Good luck on the build! Hope there are no engine surprises.
I picked up a 2003 as well and don't know what direction to go with it. I'll be following this thread closely.
Tonight’s project was the air box. I thought about purchasing a new one but all the ones I’ve seen are beat up and almost 200 bucks. I took a listerine bottle cap and melted it with my soldering iron to fix some of the cracks. Ive used this method before and it works great. Gave it a good clean and here is the result.
I got the subframe all cleaned up. Not sure what I’m going to get into next probably the Engine, maybe the wheels. If anybody has any parts for these things please let me know!!

Nice!
btw you have a 2004 judging by the swing and linkage.
Yup! And the 03 still had the 99+ style forks/brake hose routing. This is a good thing by the way - the 03's were a strange 1 off year.
Hell yeah that is awesome I guess I will run the VIN I didn't even think to check that hopefully it is an 04 I'm sure you guys are probably right
Lol you guys are awesome thank you !
Those rims bother me just because they are the D.i.D U rims those didn't come stock on the 04's - 02. Those where stock on the 00 n 01's. And they didn't last because they were prone to cracking.
The wheels may have been swapped at some point even the brake rotors look 00 01.
I was thinking the same thing about the wheels but I think I’m going to get all new stuff for that department. I’m trying to source some clamps and I’m not sure if I can get new suspension or if I should just refurbish the stock stuff. Going to work on the engine tonight and see what I’m working with. Going to start ordering some stuff bolts and plastics the basics
Dawn dish soap, scotch brite, steel wool and a few hours later
You can prob get some decent coin for those u rims if they fairly intact. Just saying. They pretty rare.
Stopped by Faster U.S.A. for some goodies. I’m still undecided on hub color should i polish them or bronze?
Don't touch the bronze cerakote!! (Looks terrible imho)
Blast them/ polish or have them machined finish natural/ or anodized by tcr.
I would like to anodize but it’s like 100 a hub. Maybe natural is the way to go I’ll figure it out l. Do agree with you that ano looks better
Worked on the front hub tonight. Got it to a place I’m happy with. I think after putting in the work I am going to leave them raw/polished. I think it will go along with the other parts on the bike nicely. Here are some photos, I still have to do the rear.
Engine hangers
More cleaning tonight. Also new jets in the carb we went from 165/52 to now 162/50. Patiently waiting on parts to come in.
Pit Row
Nice work so far!
Assuming you're having fresh zinc plating on anything steel you're cleaning up or it will rust straight away.
Thank you that means a lot I hope my build is half as good as yours! I'm gonna put together a batch of stuff and have it all plated at once, I also ordered new hardware. Still not sure what to do about suspension and brakes... I want it to be good but I'm not sure how much I can happily spend.
Cleaned a couple more things, laced the front wheel, renthal 997 bars with a vintage pad, WC clutch perch and a new Kill button.
I know the triple clamps are ugly and forks too and the bar mounts lol. I just couldn’t wait to see what some of the stuff looked like. Hopefully can find PC clams Bar Mount it’s probably impossible but idk what im gonna do yet
Got the suspension taken apart going to send the shock body and upper fork tubes out for coating. Will re spring and re-valve with new seals etc.
Finally ran into something slightly more difficult lol. Chain adjuster bolt now has an extractor broken off inside it
I will have more updates for you guys soon
Not true. My ‘03 had the D.I.D U rims stock as well.
Wow. That qualifies as "slightly more difficult" lol. Good luck! No advice here, I just feel your pain on this one.
That sucks
Your right I was incorrect they came stock in 2000 only. D.i.d also sold them separately. You could have real one's not the weaker stock one's.
It's like the 20" front wheel they offered around then. Kawasaki was also experimenting with the u rim and tubeless tires also. That stuff seemed like it showed up around late 99 and was gone before 2002.
If you guys know anyone that wants those rims I would be willing to sell them I’m not really sure what they are worth but I won’t be needing them.
The shoulderless rims did come on the 2004 250. I have one. Here is a quote from the 2003 kx250 test on pulpmx classic steel.
For 2003, the KX125 dropped the rather odd-looking shoulder-less rim it had used in 2002 and moved it over to the KX250. By 2005, this weird experiment in design would be retired to the ash heap of history.
New oversized front rotor and some shiny bolts.

Also some more clean guts are always a good sign
My first time using a Nickel Wurx hardware kit and I’m super stoked on how it turned out. I know it’s not Titanium but I feel like this is mandatory minimum on any bike, very satisfying.
Should have some cool stuff coming in soon!
