We used to have a vacant lot next to the complex we lived at in Humble that we had a killer practice track on. Glenn would show up and kick all our butts on my neighbore YZ-80. He taught us quite a bit considering I was 20 at the time. We were right across the street from Humble Yamaha and they used to crank us out some fine rides for sure, but it took Glenn and Shaun to really make them fly! Next time you see Glenn, ask him if he ever finished his red Ford van he was going to customize!!

I remember a kid from San Antonio that I believe Kent Howerton was working with. I think his name was Brent Freed. Has anyone heard anything else about him? I saw him run a couple of times at the Austin night track and he was crazy fast.

Wormy checking in. Just retired from TR and moved to the family ranch in Anderson (Navasota), (Bryan/CS) area. Only one other person calls me that nickname, Bo Koch! If you think the YZ's (1125) I ran back ten were anywhere near stock thing again. NOBODY ran YZ's when the came out. We had factory support from Noguchi Japan (like Mugen Honda) and Shinobi Japan (watercooled heads). Suspension was home grown. We actually ditched the Noguchi stuff and did our own stuff. My motor guy was actually a drag race motor builder. He could port for any conditions I needed. We even tried going back to a piston port motor, taking out the reed induction. Too pipey for me, but our flat track team loved it. We had four teams at HumYam. MX, flat track, trials and road race. We held state Championships in '74 in MX and trails. The trials State Champ actually went to my high school. Our team pic was on school book covers in '75, talking about embarassing! All were motors were built by the same guy. What didn't work on one team was tried on another. The road race set up was tried on a YZ175 (1/4 of a TZ 700 road racer) with massive resules. Top end to match the TZ, exhaust was built by Jemco to match the TZ pipe, carb and ignition also. So much torque that we could run the old 5 speed motor from a year earlier and it HAD to have the Shinobi head to survive. If anyone wants the true story behind Shaun's YZ60 (in '74!), chime in. It only ran 2 NMA National events and was undefeated. I never whipped Stack or Howerton.

Good to see you caught up Wormy!! I am stuck in Germany finishing a project, but I will be getting back home to Austin this weekend sometime. I will get to you as soon as I can get on the pc at home. 21 year old daughter there, I have to fight for time on it, but hey, really glad to see you made it and I will shoot you a message this weekend!

Todd Campbell takes the lead in NMA racing at Indian Dunes followed by Rick Hemme and Louie Franco. It was 1981, the last year of the air-cooled Yamaha 80.

Anyone remember Klemm Research? Browns race prep(Scott Browns Dads short lived deal)

Theres a guy on here that had white yz80's in 82 and 83 before going to firebreathing KX80s before Ponca and LL's.

Most had no idea how he had OEM white bikes. He wasnt from anywhere near where they sell them either.

Bader Manneh had some sweet Klemm Research motored KX's in the 80s.

Bader Manneh smacks a Carlsbad berm in late '80s CMC Motocross racing.

Blackopsrider7- I don't know where Bobby Moore is but I have a holeshot that he took at Saddleback and will put that on next week.

Mini Elsinore- Louie Franco stepped up to the 125 class shortly after that picture was taken. My 1982 WMGP results show him taking second in the 125 Stock Expert class behind Ron Lechien.

croom mx- It's true that many riders have drifted away from motocross. Perhaps they don't think they can compete anymore. Actually, that isn't true. The vintage clubs are bringing back '70s and '80s bikes and riders. Calvmx is a great club here in SoCal.

Sledneck- I ran into Harry Klemm at the Costa Mesa Speedway recently. He was very active in the national minicycle scene and sponsored Paul Denis, Bader Manneh, Bobby Moore and others.

Is Zach Bell that just won at LL's Chuck bell's son? I remember Chuck tearing it up in South GA and North FL back around 84-85 on his KX 80.

I raced mini flat track against Tim Aston back in the mid-Seventies on a silver tanked, twin shock YZ80A and I smoked him every week till I quit racing at the ripe old age of 11. Started racing moto in the early 80's and he was a Team Green support rider and was a rocket. Part of his deal with Kawasaki was a street bike and he got hit one day out riding and had his lower right leg cut off. His brother/mechanic rigged up a break lever on the clutch side of the bars and they went racing again with a fake leg strapped on. I remember on time at E street in Marysville, CA. Tim was flying around the track and his leg started to come loose and was spinning around and flapping in the breeze and some lady standing on the side of the track fainted when she saw it flinging around in circles. Man, we about died laughing watching this woman go face first into the sand with no arms out to break her fall. Good times in the 80' at E street. Great races there between guys like the Vohland bros. Kelly Andris, Danny Paladino, Dean Matson, the Larson Bros when they showed up, Ray Crumm Steve Lamson......

Troy blake is the reason I wanted to start racing back in the 80s. Unbelivable.

I am sad to say that he just passed away last night I believe. Very sad day for the AZ motocross scene.

District 14 Michigan

Mini riders

80A class, in 1974, 1975,1976, 1977, I had the pleasure or not?! to ride with and against.

A few; Denny Bentley, Danny Hedley, Scott Neiman, Kip, Kreg, Bigelow. I drew a blank on the others. I will add more later.

A couple girls in my class, Lisa Atkins, and Tammy Brooker were good riders.

Some of the trick bikes I raced against back then, were insane! DG monoshock framed YZs, XRs, Bater Forks, larger front wheels and motor mods galore! Ted or Ken Corrigan's 76 YZ80C had the Myerscough kit(I think) and their uncle or they told me it was pushing 16HP!)? You can(or can you) validate this for me, to what numbers those kits were producing?!

Wild Willie Surratt at Saddleback. I ran into Willie at Glen Helen recently and he was pitting for his son who is now racing.

BKJ 13- I will be looking for #73 105cc FMF bike and will try and round up those results for you too.

mr50racer- Yeah, who is #28 behind Surratt? I think you are going to like the picture that I put on here next week.

Number 28 looks like Chris Burgess. Ward Basset was usually #511 or something like that.
