From what I’ve been reading this is my understanding explained by someone in their words.
Since 2014, Ukraine has been building three lines of defense. The first one on the separation line, near Donetsk. The second one is centered in Bakhmut and the third is around Kramatorsk. Now, it is obvious the first line is down, so it is natural to go to the second line of defense with Bakhmut in its center. Once Bakhmut goes down, Russians can go either north or south (or both) to exploit the breach and force Ukrainians to once again make a choice: stay and fight (in which case you will be surrounded and eventually destroyed) or pull back and lose ground... Either way, once this line falls, they have the third line: centered around Kramatorsk. When that goes down, there is almost nothing all the way to Kiev and the Dnieper river; very few population centers, not much areas to conceal, not much army and a lot of flat terrain... That is why holding Bakhmut is important for Ukraine; the longer they hold it, the longer its their last line of defense safe. But, it seems like they won't be holding it for much longer...
Ukraine is finished as we currently know it and I will shortly explain why.

Ukraine has about 41 million people total and age demographic looks like about this:
0-14 total 5 million people(2,5 mil female / 2,5 mil male)
15-54 total 23 million people(12 mil female / 11 mil male)
55+ 13 million people
According to UN, over 15 million people has left the Ukraine because of the war. Now we know the few things from the media and Europeans has saw it themselves; the majority(90%) of the refugees are women and children. There are no older babushkas(old woman) or stariks(old man) running away from the country and all Ukrainien men aged 15-60 are banned to leave.
You can do the math and just think about how many woman are there left in Ukraine?
But women are coming back to Ukraine after the war!
No, the majority of them are not coming back after the war. Most of them have fled to western Europe or even farther in the West and they live (easy?) life on gibs (and ofcourse some are working). Average annual salary has been in the Ukraine before the war the same, as the refugee women are getting on social benefits a month and they do not have do nothing for it(at least here in Finland). Plus they are currently treated like rock stars here in the West, local churches are raising them food, clothes, entertainment, money etc and and they get all kind of attention here.
The situation is beyond sad. There are not enough people left to breed next generation after the war.

Been plenty of discussion on why Bakhmut isn't of much strategic importance. But even if Russia takes it, what makes you honestly think that can be the turning point? Russia has been pushed back significantly, a little gain in 1 area isn't going to change the tide of the war. They need something else to overcome the basic moral difference the two sides have.

Those 3 lines of defence are well known and often talked about. Why do you think both sides are sacrificing so many men if it has no strategic value?

Sort of ran into this guy, describing his tour of duty in Ukraine. the other day. The guy is a pretty good story teller. But if you listen to his stories, it does not really paint a rosy picture for Ukraine. General Milley, is a guy I have watched some. I am not sure what to make of him. He seems to be a straight shooter, even as he seems to bow or deform towards whatever administration is in charge. My point is that I believe he knows his place in the hierarchy, and takes his job seriously.
In any event it was reported, he felt Ukraine needed to begin negotiations. said they were out of food, water, fuel, the energy infrastructure was damaged going into winter and he felt the Russian troops were generally better positioned. This, General Milley's military analysis impression was expressed to President Biden. . Within a week or so Milley appeared saying the US policy would be to support Ukraine for "as long as it takes" multiple times. What "As long as it takes" meant exactly was never exactly defined.
The 2 minute video posted above by WCrider is worth a peek, Col Douglass Macgregor. paints a much worse picture. I would say the truth is somewhere between Macgregor and Milley. Milley, I seem to remember thinks casualties are around 100k on both sides, Macgregor claims 10:1 casualties favoring Russians, and claims over 500,000 Russian soldiers deployed. That doesn't bode well even if his numbers are off by 75%. Ukraine may very well be running out of soldiers. and that is how you ultimately lose the war.

A russian friend said to me that Ukrainians fighters are for the most part dead. First time he saw a black dead body ^^. He says a lot of germans, Rosbeefs and Americans are fighting for Ukraine. He said, for the USA, a weak Russia is a weak China and if Europeans must paye of their blood and money for this, whatever.
How is that different to your trusted media? I have been reading since the war beginning, that Russia is 2 weeks away from total collapse and Putin is terminally ill and die within weeks?
I would say its safer to assume that 99,9% news and info from the warzone is pure propaganda, either its coming from Russia or Western news agencys.
They should negotiate peace asap, there is abolutely no reason to kill more people(mostly white males are dying atm) in the meatgrinder and there is no reason to start WW3 because of the fight between 3rd world countries like Russia and Ukraine.
