Watch this short clip from 1989, just past the 2min mark you get an idea of how rough and gnarly it got. Compare that to this years race...actually there is no comparison.

I miss motocross. Sad that there is so very little of it left anymore.

I was hoping there would be an '89 clip in this when I clicked it; thanks Scottie!

For those who can't get the video (like me) I am pretty sure this video is what is supposed to be above - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUM0j9saINQ

That rough part at 2:10 is the uphill on the far side after the long sweeper. Back in the days when they let you onto the track I used to walk the entire track as my first activity. Walking that uphill was always so awe inspiring, It was so gnarly I wasn't sure that if given the chance I could just plain ride up it, I would have to go around that section.

Whoops and jumps used to be obstacles that slowed you down now they are made purposfully so the riders can do them with rythm. That rythm should be what Supercross is about. Motocross is supposed to be like in the video or even worse like it would have been a few years earlier.

The other side sucks!

I really don't see where the track in 89 was any rougher than in 09. I do see where massive chassis, suspension, and rider technique advances have changed what we're watching.

I've got to agree with HansiKursch, whoops and jumps should be obstacles to slow you down, not rhythm sections to piece together like SX.

You should watch again at 2:10, you only see the hill for a few seconds. Ricky Johnson goes up it then you see Jeff Ward go up about 1/2 way then it cuts to another part of the track. There is no part of any National track that is close to that uphill in terms of roughness and there hasn't been in a very long time. That uphill is very smooth now with a big step up double at the top.

There are other parts of the track that have changed over the years, some for the better, some for the worse IMHO. Almost all changes removed technicalness and unpredictability and added airtime and rythm. I like airtime too, but when it's all airtime it's no longer motocross, it's supercross.

2:04 to 2:16... classic Ricky Johnson. He was awesome on the bike... wish his career wasn't cut short.

i was thinking after watching this years dilla- someone should take the dozer away from the people that own that track....... enough of the skyshots and pre-made jumps..... what made dilla the best track in the world was how it was in it's natural state, and how rough it got.... it's not nearly the track it used to be..... sad, very sad...

i think its got more to do with all the dirt that was there back then... meaning the amount

i could be wrong... i've been known to be in the past and will no doubt be in the future but that's what i'm thinkin

It has everything to do with the dirt. Back in the day it was pure loam and it got so rough. The back uphill and the uphill before screw U looked like Mogul fields. They ruined it when they started hosting 1000+ AM riders 2x year. Although it surely was fun riding the national track, it took its toll on the dirt. Of course the advancement of the bikes also helped turn it into the freeway that it is today.
