I’ve been an addict for about 19 years now. If you keep telling junkies it’s not their fault, they will take the easy out and believe it. Also, fyi, rehab/treatment facilities only validate that it’s everyone’s fault but the user.

You’ve gotta want sobriety for yourself.

Agree, we as society refuse to take responsibility for our actions.

From addictions to student loan debt and many other things in between.. We have to be accountable for our actions, we have to realize the consequences of our actions.

I think that showing Nico or any other person trying to get their stuff together some support when they are clean, and trying hard to stay that way could help them. If they slip up, offer help, but be clear that if they continue along with the drugs or whatever then your support will Not be there UNTIL they are able to show they are going to really try and clean up. People can become addicted to drugs in so many different ways. I would have thought that a message board for sport that has such a high chance of bad injuries and chronic pain, would not have so many people that would think the way that some are thinking on here.I guess it is different , but just feeling the stuff your body goes through to clear out the drugs , showed me how unpleasant it is and I imagine how very difficult it could be if somebody enjoyed the feeling the drugs gave them along with how bad it feels to stop taking them. When I had the pain in my foot, I hated the way the meds made me feel and think, But the pain kept me from doing anything so it was either take the meds or be stuck doing nothing. If my pain had only been a year or 2 I could have toughed it out. But after 3 plus years of being so limited by pain it felt good to be able to be out and doing things. Most of the Dr.s I saw where not a help as far as getting the pain fixed. And I worry that if I did not have the people around me that I did that I could have a very different story. My parents made it extremely clear that they would stop any and all help if I was abusing the meds or did not stop taking them after the pain went away. Maybe I have not experienced what real addiction feels like , I don't know. But the brush with being physically dependant on pain meds that I had really opened up my eyes .When my pain went away so did the pain meds. But so many of the medical people that did not know me or my situation would judge me based off the timeframe I had been taking pain meds. Many of them said I would never be able to stop taking them ( mostly the nurses and other staff I would see during each stay after surgery ). Maybe proving them wrong was a little motivation for me and helped me too. The Dr.s that were with me for most of the injury never doubted , or never said they doubted that I would stop after the pain was gone. I remember expressing my concern about addiction and they said not to worry until after the pain is gone and they had a process to get me off of the meds. I know that this is not his first comeback, I do not know how many chances he has been given. But if you stop giving somebody the chance to be clean, and support them . You make it easier for them to go back to doing whatever they were doing. I think giving them the chance to be around good people and give support while they are clean, but letting them know that if they are not clean it all goes away. I think that could be a bigger help than totally writing them off for ever. There is always a first and last time for everything . Sometimes people just take a few more try's before they have their last.I also think that every person and addiction is different and there is no single way that will fix or help everybody. For me , I feel like if I was told I was powerless over if I took a pill or not, that would make it much easier for me to keep taking pills.But some people those programs work. And maybe that is real addition , being or atleast feeling that you do not have the power to not take that pill, or whatever. For me , I never felt like I did not have the choice , I just had to decide do I want to stay in bed , in pain today. Or be foggy and have enough relief of the pain that I am able to do some other things that I enjoy. I had many sleepless nights while I refused to make that choice of taking the pill.And then that first step in the morning when the pain settled into my swollen foot I felt broken as I had to take the pain meds and wait a while for them to start working before being able to get up. Going through what I went through made me realize I had no idea how the random person who was addicted to drugs , found themselves at that place in life. I did not know what their choices were that lead them to that moment. I knew some of the choices they made, But I did not know the alternatives. Before my experience I was not really open to thinking like that. I just assumed that somebody addicted to drugs had made the choice to ruin their lives , knowing that would be the outcome.Now I know there are many paths that only the person on the path knows where it started . And that a lot of people do not have a good option. They are stuck with just bad ones to pick from.So maybe giving those people a couple chances to make some better choices and help guide them along is worth the time and maybe those people can help others.

Izzi lost his chance to be a part of the motocross community, IMO. No amount of jail time for beating women will give him that privilege again. The fact that red bull and the event promoters allow him to compete in this is questionable at best.

I don’t even go to nationals anymore because of how ignorant and disrespectful this community can be. Let’s not forget about how hated the Stewarts were for not looking the same as everyone else on the line. Big James getting spit on, James getting flipped off every lap of a race. Or how about Dylan getting booed by Thousands of fans every weekend in supercross? Barcia’s boo’s last a few minutes.

It sounds like some of you are lucky enough not to have a friend or family member in a similar situation, and I hope you never have to experience it. I will never support or approve of his past actions, but I know it takes a lot for someone to overcome it and I hope Nico uses the sport he loves to continue on the right track.

We have to do better.

You notice those pics are from the North East. Common behavior in the region.

Yep, such soy boy comments in this thread. I grew up in SoCal. Go to a Dodger game wearing the visiting teams gear, and there’s a good chance you’ll get in a fight if not stabbed. One guy got put in a coma a few years ago.

For those if you who think “people just do stuff, and make the wrong choices” This could not be further from the truth. Energy does not just die. If something traumatic happens in life it is a hard road to recovery especially when at a younger age where the brain quite often buries the memory for survival. A lot more knowledge and respect needed in this thread. Izzi did some terrible things yes but he is finally being his best self again, take a look in the mirror if you are trying to tare the guy down.

Probably witnessed as a kid abuse and ended up doing so unconsciously as a young adult. This is what causes addiction, Trauma. It starts way way back when were kids. I too know far more than i care to admit about addiction. I am happy he is being supported and given another chance. From victim to warrior!

Well said. I am all about forgiveness, but Izzi had a ten year run of horrible behavior including scamming racers out of money for parts that never got shipped. Everyone makes mistakes but a ten year run of them is pretty character defining in my mind. As far as I am concerned, Izzi burned his sympathy card the 3rd or 4th time he got arrested, after he beat up the woman who tried to help him and stole from a senior.

I wish Nico Izzi all the best just not in our sport.
