I'm posting for two reasons...

1): I just want to contribute before it gets dumbgeoned.

2): To provide a bit of perspective. That being to remind all parties involved (especially the Alessi's) that an extremely small percentage of the overall fan base of mx/sx and MIke/Jeff are following this thread. EXTREMELY SMALL! Like so small that in the grand scheme of things it is so insignificant that it just plain doesn't matter.

Of the almost 14,000 views, 98% of them are the same people viewing it over and over and over (I've clicked on the thread probably 30 times, just to stay up to date...and I KNOW, I'm not the only one). So don't go on thinking that 14,000 of your fans are following the thread...it's not true, its probably more like 1000 AT MOST...1000 of the millions of fans in the world. That means 99.9999% of the mx/sx fans in the world have no idea this is going on.

I point that out because you don't need to feel like your world is crashing down and EVERYONE is coming down on you, or doesn't like you. Because that isn't the case, not even a little bit. In fact if every single person that posts on this message board didn't like you, overall it still wouldn't negatively affect your image.

(Plus, I just don't think that many people read Matthes stuff on his website...everyone loves his "observations" pieces on racerX, but even I didn't know he had his own site until this thread)

I know that the because "you" ("me" or "I") follow/read the message boards, it's easy to get sucked into the "because I do , EVERYONE does" mentality. But it just isn't true.

Anyway, no worries...ignore this crap, and it will blow over before you know it. And even if you don't ignore it, you're autograph lines at the races will still be just as long as they would have been had it never happened.

THE MESSAGE BOARDS ARE INSIGNIFICANT IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS. Don't forget that.
Yes, but much like a poll...wouldn't the general consensus of a board such as this reflect the feelings of the sport's larger population?

This thread is epic! Smile

It has brought the TOP guy from one of the most talked about family's in the sport to VitalMX.
I think the only thing that could possibly out do this one...is if Big James joined up.

No, because virtually ALL of the public negativity in the sport (especially around the Alessi's...case in point: this thread) is FUELED by the message boards.

The magazines, TV, press releases, PR stunts, etc (where ALL fans get their info from) very seldom EVER say anything negative about anyone...EVER. And as a result the fans that get their info about the sport from those sources (99.99999% of the fans) are going to have a FAR DIFFERENT opinion of riders than fans that follow the message boards.

The only place negativity gets fueled (and really blown out of proportion) is on the message boards. Since it is the only medium that offers the opportunity.

So, unlike general polling which takes a random sample of everyone; message board posters and their exposure to the negativity, rumor, speculation, accusations etc. that go on here, have been "tainted", and thus are not an accurate representation of the "average fan" that doesn't post on the message boards (and isn't exposed to the constant negativity, speculation, rumor, accusations, etc that goes on here). And so it is completely different than a "general poll". It would be like polling the democrats in congress to get their opinion of Bush, and then trying to say that is an accurate representation of the views of the American people.

I am the only person I ride with that posts/follows the message boards. The guys I ride with get their info from the TV (during races), and magazines. And they dont' have nearly the exaggerated opinions (good and bad) of the riders that I do because all they use to form their opinions of a rider is TV interviews and what the magazines write about them (almost all of which is positive or at least neutral). And that doesn't mean I'm more "well informed", it just means I'm follow a venue that tends to magnify and exaggerate the "negative" and "positive" sides of everyone (no matter how uneducated and baseless the opinions stated are).

Anyway...I'm not sure I'm explaining my point very well...but I hope you see where I'm going.

Good point PaleBlue. KTM is definately looking at thier racing program closely. However, I do know having Alessi ride on orange again is something they would enjoy seeing.

I notice how easy it is for these reporters to bash Tony for all these horrible things he has done, and that certainly makes for good reading. Thats the type of reporting that draws you in like moths to a porch light. But I do welcome Mathes to add in some of the other details he may know about the Alessi's, some of the good stuff

For instance.....many of the riders are allowed to practice at the Alessi tracks on both coasts as they travel. In some cases, its the only class facility they may have access to. Alessi Racing keeps the facilities prepped for thier guests, and at no cost.

For the last couple of years, Ashley F. has stayed at one of thier houses and practiced on their SX tracks to get ready for X games. Also at no cost.

In years past, they have helped out many young riders like Hamblin (when he was an amateur), when they had challenges getting support from thier own family members.

I am in no way saying that there record is clean as a whistle. But overall, they are a good hard working Christian family and have been very generous to others in the sport. And Jeff has never been rasied to be 2nd to anyone. He receives the same support from the family (and Alessi Racing). The two boys are very different and have different attitudes and approach the sport very differently. Thats what makes thier performance different. And they both have a different relation with thier father. But they are a lot closer as a family than you all think.

Well, I will admit the nasty stuff does make for good reading. So please keep it flowing. Just don't turn yourself into a tard because its easier to get sucked into the bad stuff. None of us are perfect. And if Mathes only wrote about the good stuff, none of you would show up to read it. I would probably pass that up myself for a juicy J-Law update.

How smart would it be to throw his sources under the bus; then people really would stop talking to him.

Why base an artile on rumor and speculatuion?? He said it was an opinion piece. Did he go to the Alessi camp and confirm anything he heard from his sources?? Did he even think about getting the other side of the story??? Why didn't he go to the Alessi's and try and confirm what he heard. Who did he hear it from, a truck driver? A flagger? A team manager?? Did the sources he talked to know he was going to use the info he got from them to write a story?

Your the dense one, we only have heard one side of the story, and you have made up your mind. The writer of the story didn't get both sides and form an opinion, he got one side an ran with it. Thinking his story is 100% correct without hearing from the other side is dense. Congrats, you fall into that catagory.

There is a rumor he isn't well liked in the pits, and going by his own thought of "where there is smoke there is fire," I'm guessing he is burning a few bridges of his own.
Trip

You are an idiot. Matthes has worked in the industry longer then you have and has formed friendships with people that KNOW what the fuck is going on. You on the other hand speculate that Matthes is writting about stuff based on rumors. Did you ask the Alessi's if what Matthes said was untrue? No so shut the fuck up and stop trying to shit on Matthes for speaking his mind on a situation that everyone has wondered about for the last five years. Yes Matthes does come down hard on certain riders but he will be the first person to congratulate them when they do well. Matthes knows a hell of a lot more then you will ever know about the Alessi situation and for the fact that you want Matthes to give up his sources is just stupid. Maybe you shit on your friends when they ask you not to say anything to anyone but in a industry such as this that will get you no where. And the point comes up once again...How long has Matthes been at this? Long enough to know that he isnt writting bullshit, he writes what is known with out kicking anyone under the bus.

And really? how would everyone in the industry know about shockgate if it DIDNT happen? Explain that one...Trip

man... what the hell happened to all the fighting and epic-ness of this thread?!

8/11/2009 12:52pm
So let me be a bit more specific. I know and work with the Alessi's (and I work with a few other pro's) and I can say some of Matthes comments are close, some are dead on, and some are simply not correct. But I will not tell you which ones are which. So you have to keep on reading this wonderful thread to try and figure it out!

But do we have to call ourselves "drama queens"? Why not "out spoken motostuds" or something like that.

Hmmm...but isn't there a whole lot of bleed over effect that hits the non motoboard folks too?

For example, when I read some hub bub about James not riding the outdoors, I'll then end up talking to all of my moto buddies about it and even the non-boarder types will then hear the controversy attached to the story. I'd imagine my behavior is pretty typical when it comes to shooting the shit about moto.

I don't think there is as much bleed over as you think.

It's one thing to "hear the controversy attached to the story", and another thing to be posting about it, and arguing about it, and defending it, and attacking it on a message board.

The act of posting about it, and defending it, and arguing about it entrenches and magnifies a specific point of view on a subject. So even though others hear about it, they don't have the same strong feelings about it as a message board poster would.

I know that even as an observer of the message boards (but not a poster)-like eight years ago-my opinios weren't as strong as when I started posting about things.

It's just different.

For all I/we know, you are a hired publicist or well written/spoken friend trying to right AAA's postings, whomever that is. AAA did more tarnishing than that article ever did for sure.

And before anyone asks.. I'm nobody.
why not state which ones are simply incorrect?

One things for sure, this thread has brought out a lot of first time posters and posers. I wonder why most everyone is so averse to post their real names?

Man, if I were managing one of these MX athletes I think I'd smash any device capable of loading any MX related web page within reach of the rider or family. Right or not, there is really no good that can come with brawling with some crackpots on a message board or confronting journalist under a not so secret username.

I've been saying that for a long time.
so let me get this straight my opinion does not matter.....SHOCKING!

Do you know my woman?
Don't be so hard on yourself...the only opinions of yours that don't matter are those relating to things in the MX industry that you couldn't possibly be close enough to the situation to form a valid opinion of.

But don't worry, you're in that boat with good company...

It would take about 19 pages to sum up all the bullshit.
