The first time I ever saw it was in 1982, Donnie Hansen at Indian Dunes. The second was Johnny O’mara 1982 on Suicide Mountain at Saddleback. In 1983 I was following Kyle Lewis around the international track at Indian Dunes, he was doing it over the finish line jump.

While I’ve seen it a lot throughout the years, nobody took it to the extreme that Stewy did.

Do you know where those tracks are stupid?...Yeah where mostly nobody will ever see it...Show me a video during a race where it happened in real time like James did it Seaurchin......Whistling

I think it was evolved in the late 70,s, but James perfected it into what we see today.

I guess it depends on what you define as a "scrub". Body/bike english to stay lower? Or both tires breaking traction on the face of the jump to alter trajectory? Kind of a blurry line between the two, really.

Hey Seaweed..I searched it up..this is what it said...Dry

James

James not only created the scrub as it is known today, but he also changed the way people ride - literally changed the entire sport of motocross with his style - and everybody wants to be able to scrub like Bubba, they just aren't good enough. That is where the half-scrub somes in. | Quote

It's so wild Priddy named it the Bubba scrub 11 years before James was even born. Or did James get the nickname from the maneuver? Whistling

This is O’mara, but he didn’t call it the scrub, him and Donnie said it was scrubbing speed.

Truth be told. a fair few photos that look impossibly sick were snapped just as things came unglued. GuyB had a great shot of Windham at Glen Helen just laid over burying it in the first turn, but in video of the follow through he truly buried it and almost high sided when the bike stood up.

No, he was hitting a bump just before the top and throwing it to crest the top, it was pretty sick back then. In 82, nobody was jumping it.
