That Montesa brings back a lot of memories, I used to go to the local drugstore and read motorcycle magazines every Saturday. I can remember Kenny Zahrt was on a lot of the covers as a test rider. I
didn't start racing until 1980 but I started riding around 74/75. I practiced at all the same places you did plus I went to the Springfield pits also, we would go to Big berm, Aquasco and the old Blue/ Grey track off moxley rd in Damascus, after they closed down. Seems like there's no where to ride anymore other than at a track, everything has been built over. I have some pictures taken at Tysons and Springfield I'll have scan them and post some.

We never went to Springfield but I'd love to see your photos of the Tysons pits (or any old photos) from back in the day. Please do post them! I do have one photo of me jumping on a Yamaha 175 at the Contee pits close to Old Gunpowder Rd near where the Recreation center was built that I'll have to dig up and post. I have a lot of fond memories from days spent riding with teenage buddies but we never took the time to take photos. About ten years ago talking to a friend at work I discovered that I had met and talked with him at the Tysons pits back in the day. His name is Frank Glover, he was raised in Arlington, he was a big guy with a big beard 10 years older than we were and he rode a Bultaco 250. What are the odds of a boy from P.G. County working alongside a guy in 2012 at the Army Corps of Engineers in Winchester that I had met in the Tysons Corner pits in the early 1970's? He retired 5 years ago.

By the way, that Montesa was stored in my dad's shed in the backyard until 1979/1980 when a guy that he worked with offered to take it off my hands for $200. He agreed to $250 and took it away. That's a decision that I've regretted more and more as the years have ticked by. I hope that my beautiful machine is still out there and didn't end up at the dump. As an adult I've had homes with a garage since 1984 and I could have easily just held onto it.

Very cool updates - especially the reference to the Tyson's pits - there is very little info about them out there. I was not a rider, just a kid growing up in the 70's, but dreamed of having a dirt bike (finally got a three wheeler in 84). Anyone around me that rode did so at the Tyson's pits if they had a trailer or in a field across Nutley street before they filled it with town houses.

Would love to see any old school pics.

Cool contessa BTW!!

I wonder what year riding at the Tyson pits went away for good? I remember being told that someone was hurt badly on the property and after that the police would occasionally chase away and/or ticket vehicles parked with motorcycle trailers. If I had to guess the last time that I rode there was 1973.

I do seem to remember something about a severe injury or even death. Would have had to been after about 78 or so to be cognizant in my memory. I grew up in Vienna but most of my family was in Mclean, se we were always running up and down 123. I was always glued to the window going by, hoping to see some bikes being trailered in or out.

I think the Tysons pits started getting closed down in 1980 and we're probably completely gone by 81/82. I remember having a picture of me going off a jump with buildings from Tysons 2 mall in the background. Even though I only rode there for a year It was were I learned how to ride with a lot of credit going to a chance meeting with Scott Bland who worked at Cycle Sport wich was close by so he would ride in the pits after work. Anyway he watched me riding and told me I needed to work on my turns. We did a simple exercise were we did a circle 8 around two old 55 gallon barrels trying to increase your speed as you go around. I remember him saying he practice this simple thing everytime he rides. It was a game changer for me I went from the back of the pack to the front at the races.

Hey Bezerk'n, I see that you live in Silver Spring. Are you a SS native? I lived in Colesville in the mid-80's moving to Damascus in 1992. I worked for the phone company C&P, Bell Atlantic then Verizon mainly in Montgomery County from 1979 until 2008 when I retired so I spent a large chunk of my adult life in MOCO. After retiring from Verizon I went to work for the US Army COE where I'm still working. I moved to Purcellville VA in 2006.

Of course that is the Rt. 7 side, I'd love to see some photos of the pit/bowl side.

MaiciJC1 and RBrider we may have ridden together! I grew up in Laurel in MD City at the edge of AA and PG counties by the horse track and graduated from Meade Sr High in 1980 and even rode on that track you mentioned on base plus there were a couple different ones on base or next to it. Last one I remember was right by Meade SR High next to 175

Did you guys know Mike Farmer or Mitch Owen? Mike is still blazing fast and racing today.

I loved pounding out laps at the dust bowl in Glen Bernie in those 2 feet deep sand woops and crazy hot temps.

Did either of you ever ride at MD City off of Brock Bridge RD? I lived right there and started riding there in 1976. We also rode in Mock Field the land where Meade had their mock wars. There was a old road under the parkway into it from MD City and we could ride all the way over to Odenton and the RR tracks you are taking about. And yes it is a federal offense if you get caught riding there …. And I did. 😆
Steve!!! What's up man?!! Yeah, we rode together a few times! Over there off of 175 by the old Texaco station. Definitely remember Mike Farmer, and I remember cutting through fort meade by NSA and over to 198 to get over to Laurel. Damn, forgot all about the Glen Burnie dust bowl, and there was the pits on Ridge road and the other Pits (aka, "the Clay Banks," the party spot -- LOL!!) of telegraph road heading toward dorsey road. Then there was Old Man's trail (ran parallel to route 175 in Severn through odenton until you hit the train tracks, and then you could ride that all the way out to crofton!). Made it out to MD city a couple of times to ride with your buddy, Ben Schaefer (Great dude -- he helped me rebuild my 78 Honda CR 250 motor in shop class and we even made some custom engine mounts!) I remember Willie Schneider -- who I know is down Florida...a couple of other MD city dudes who raced back in the late 70's and early 80s ended up down there as well. Great time to be alive and ridin' back then!

The mock wars were held on the Army training ranges on Fort Meade -- lots of interesting history back there! That's where General Patton established the Mechanized Tank Cavalry! If you ever wonder why you there were a few old tanks scattered on base -- its because of Patton. But I digress! LOL!!

Not sure if you remember Rich Emerson and maybe even Mark Ekwall from MHS -- we did alot of trail riding together. They both live out west now and are big ADV riders now. Going to try to link up and saddle up with for TAT and/or BDR rides out there in the near future.

Belong to a couple of offroad clubs here in MD and did modern ECEA, district 7 harescrambles and alot of vintage cross country racing between 2006-2016, but life/work has got in the way since then. Wish I had more time to ride! Busy & hectic life for the past 6 years. Retiring in 2 years -- and hopefully I'll be able to get back in the saddle on a more regular basis.

Great hearing from you Steve, and thanks helping to remember all those great places that we were fortunate to ride when we kids. Good times.

Edit: Dingles75 - Contee Rd -- yeah, I remember that place too! Rode there with couple of MD city guys in 79-80 Thanks for the reminder.

Steve Ostman, Gary Manos and the Schneider brothers all lived about a block from each other in MD City. Willie is big time into deep sea fishing now. Rick Welch lived at the MD City entrance and he took me to my very 1st race at Budds Creek.

Contee pits was a great place to ride all year long even in the snow. We all parked at John Huston’s house.

I flew into Baltimore to buy a Honda a couple months ago and Ben has a honda specialty shop by Columbia and he had checked it out for me and I stopped in and saw him for a couple hours. Ben got me started riding a trials bike and that taught me to ride with my feet on the pegs more.

Some how I missed this post, sorry about the late response . Im not from Silver Spring originally but I like the area. I just got a new scanner so I will post some Tysons pics soon. Right now there are two things holding me up. I'm still figuring out the scanner software and I haven't found all the pictures that I really wanted to post, I might have some from the old Blue/Gray track in Damascus. I guess I should just post what I have so far and just add the other stuff as I find it.

Here's one from Contee's circa 1990. I rode there from 83 to 93 and loved every minute of it. The first few years were the best. We would start near the round tunnel, ride everything on one side, down to the square tunnel, then everything back on the other side. Met, rode and made friends with so many dirt bikers there. And I lived in Northern VA so it was a little bit of a cruise to get there but totally worth it. We even rode there at night, good times.

Thanks for your response. Looking forward to seeing those pictures at Tysons. Unfortunately I have none. Every time that I drive past Tysons I go back in time and imagine how there was basically nothing there except for the Holiday Inn and AT&T tower. Does anyone remember the old mansion that looked like a haunted house that could be seen from the beltway where the Capitol One Property is now? I'm showing my age but I read that it was torn down in 1970. Where was the Blue/Gray track in Damascus. Somehow I never made it there. I moved to Damascus in 1991 where we raised our children. Moved to Virginia in 2006.

I remember crossing through the round tunnel. I don't remember the square one but we were riding there during an earlier time period. I do have a photo of me landing a jump on my Yamaha 175 from 1970 or 1971' that I'll dig up and post. I would have been 13 or 14 years old. Crossing from side to side through the Rt. 95 round drainage tunnel I remember riding what seemed like all day without riding on the same trail. Those were the days!

That's cool you rode there that long ago. A buddy crashed in the round tunnel once. He slid along and the bolts that connect the pipe sections together tore him up some. The square tunnel was south of the round one, about a mile I figure. It had a stream running through it with a sandy soil base. When you popped out of it at one end you had to ride along the shoulder of 95 for about 1/4 mile to get to the next pit area. It was always fun to accelerate to match the speed of the cars going down 95 then try to gas it past them.

Of course it was so long ago that it could be that I've simply forgotten the square tunnel. I have a vivid memory of how small the light at the other end of the round tunnel looked and us kids looking at each other nervously before jumping in and doing it anyway.

Great memories….. The tunnels were pretty long and you had to just ride towards the small light at the end and hope there was nothing in the way. The moss was pretty slippery too.

Not really, "Old MD Photos", but just a note for all motorcycle enthusiast.
This past weekend, we went to Alabama to visit family and our son suggested we go to the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. It is the Worlds Largest Motorcycle Collection. Well worth a visit.
It has way more than motorcycles. There is a track and cars were, I guess, having, "track time" and there was an auction happening downstairs.
I was more interested in the dirt bikes of course.
Reason for the photos of the Honda Z50? It was my first bike in 1969 and I still have it.
.
Has anyone else visited there?

You can't be in a hurry when going there. Need at least a few hours.

The Broom Factory in Baltimore has a large D7 memorabilia area. Haven’t made it there yet but heard something about. Big get together in October 2023 and hoping to go.

I was thinking about bringing my photo albums there and either donating them to let riders look through them or if there are any photos of the visitors, let them take photos of themselves out and keep them.

The other thing was to copy and post the photos here and on the FB group.

Once I am dead and gone, what is my family going to do with 1000 + District 7 photos?

I was thinking about bringing my photo albums there and either donating them to let riders look through them or if there are any photos of the visitors, let them take photos of themselves out and keep them.

The other thing was to copy and post the photos here and on the FB group.

Once I am dead and gone, what is my family going to do with 1000 + District 7 photos?

.
Thats a really good idea we are starting to get rid of stuff to full time RV so there will be lots of old Big Berm pics and D7 trophies to donate.
