I am helping out 2 families planning to race the THOR Mini O’s in Florida.
As we are European (Swedish), we do not recognize the youth classes you have in the US.
The boys are 11 and 12 years old and when looking at the website for the event, there seem to be multiple classes that they could be eligible for.
https://unlimitedsportsmx.com/events/thor-mini-os/
They are pretty fast and win races here in their age group.
They will race Husky TC 85 respectively KTM SX 85 "big wheels" (19/16" wheels).
Am I right when I read the website that the 11 year old can participate in following classes;
85CC (9-11) LIMITED
85CC (9-11)
Am I right when I read the website that the 12 year old can participate in following classes;
85cc (12-13) Limited
85cc (12-13)
Super Mini 1 (12-15)
So, I guess "Limited" is stock engines?
If so, what is the difference between 85cc (12-13) and Super Mini 1 (12-15)? Is it just that Super Mini allow larger displacement (max 112cc)
Looking forward to some guidance!
Thanks!

Here are some key notes:
Age on January 1st is your “AMA Age” throughout the entire year.
Big wheels cannot be used in any classes other than supermini. He cannot race supermini unless he is Ama 12 (12 on the first day of the year) and at that he can only race one class(supermini 1). He will also be racing 105cc and 112cc’s in this class, there’s probably not a single person with a stock bore and stroke in this class. Would not recommend and would instead put small wheels on the bike and get him used to that even if he is bigger than the average 12 year old.
85cc classes they are eligible depending on their age:
85cc 10-11 limited
85cc 10-11
85cc 12-13 Limited
85cc 12-13
Mini Sr. 1 12-14 (also an 85cc class)
Limited classes pretty much means a bone stock bike with the exception of bars and levers. But check out the rulebook out, there are some other minor parts that are okay. MANY people sign up for this class and don’t realize how much of the bike must remain OEM so be sure to check out the rulebook which can be found on the ama website. They won’t let you on the gate if you are spotted with an “illegal part” in staging or if you do some how squeeze through without other competitors or officials noticing then once someone does notice you will be disqualified. And believe me, there’s always someone on staging that is going to go find a referee even if the kids aren’t competing for wins. So best to be educated on the rulebook before you get there forsure.
There are still limitations to these non limited classes such as bore, stroke, wheels, etc. so be sure to check out the rulebook there as well. Hopefully this points you in the right direction.
9-11 is open to mods
9-11 Ltd is stock bike. There are certain mods you can do like suspension re valve for weight. Ama has a limited list.
85cc class is always small wheels in US.
He's also eligible for 65 10-11 and 10-11 Ltd. You'll find most kids will race all 4 of those classes.
Only doing 2 classes means it'll be a long week with a lot of down time.
In certain class. So sign up quick when they open.
Hopefully they are pretty fast, 85 class is no joke. Most the kids won’t even qualify for the main event
Yepp - we are on for the challenge!
Pit Row
Got both their birthdays’ months now, one turns 11 years in November and one turns 12 years in April.
So their “AMA ages” is then 10 and 11 then and should put them both in the same 9-11 years classes.
It will fore sure be a challenging event, not only the competition but also due to the fact that they will have to get used to the small wheel bikes.
Nevertheless, they will for sure have and lifetime adventure!
Once again, thanks to all of you and the contribution and answers to my questions – cheers! 😊
