I have an 05 CR250F and have had some problems which i thought was just a loose cam chain. So I took my bike in to my local shop and had them look at it. They came back saying that the balancer shaft was out of wack and said that estimated repairs would cost around $1100. A balancer only cost $170. They said it wouldn't cause any engine problems but it would make the ride more comfortable. To me it sounds like hey are trying to pull a fast one to me, but I'm not sure how crucial this part is to the engine so if anyone has any info, fill me in please.

I normally do, but I can only do basic things that get me by. I'm not big into tearing into the engine unless I know exactly what I'm doing.

Shop manual, and trusted members of TT, and you're all set. If you are still not comfortable with that, find the mechanics at your local track and see if they want to work on the side at home, while you watch.

If you have an '05 CRF 250 and have never been into the motor , you are on borrowed time. I suggest a complete rebuild, or a shiney "for sale" sign.

I myself have never been deep into the motor, but Ive had the guys at my shop tune it up and have the top and bottom end rebuilt when needed.

Mx engines to me are very simple be it 2 or 4. So I can't really say just do it yourself. What I do suggest is get yourself a service manual and study it, then make your decision on if it's to hard for you or not. Even if you need special tools it will be way cheper for you in the long run, and you get that special 1on1 time with your bike

I've been riding 4 stroke 450's since 2000.I just had 160 hours on my stock 07 Honda CRF. I thought something major let loose.I've never had the top end off any of my 4 strokes. Never had an issue till now. Had a full top end rebuild done by guys here near me that I trust and I got a deal on my parts from the North Hollywood Honda that I ride out of. $880 total. That's all I've spent on engine repair since I started riding my 426 in 2000. Not bad,I'd say.Wink

With my Honda...never took the top end apart. Zero cost. Rode a season....sold it...they are still riding the bike with no rebuild.

My old '89 CR500 went 6 years with only air filter cleanings and tranny oil changes, and two sets of rings, just to freshen her up. Cost me about $250 total, I'd say. Not bad for one bike.

Oh...fuck...4-stroke thread. My bad. I'd go with the shiny FOR SALE sign every 2 years.

Do as much as you can for yourself, or pay some handy dude to help you out. These engines are not rocket science. Read some, spend a few hours to get the point, and ask some question at TT as some suggest. Repair the sucker, or sell it with info about this issue. If you rebuild for yourself for low cost and the engine then explodes I would suggest you buy a totally new engine from AJ. I think he sells new engines from 07, 08 and 09 for like 1800-1900 $. Not a chance in heaven would I pay 1100 to do a rebuilt...

X2 to what oldx wrote........

working on your bike is a part of the deal for riding it.... you get to know your bike better, get a working knowledge of engines in general, and really, it's not as hard as you think it is.... so seriously, get the manual, and start pulling it apart..... if you run into problems, just ask questions at the track or on the forums... just pay attention to what you are doing and everything will go fine, i promise (unless you are a total moron).......

if they were trying to pull a fast one on you i would think they would say something like "this will cause severe engine damage if it isnt done right away".
ask for a list of the parts that will be replaced. i kind of doubt they are just replacing the balancer.

I just can't fathom how anyone can afford to be involved in motocross and NOT work on their own stuff.

Get a shop manual and some helpful friends, and you may actually be able to stay in the sport long-term. You will learn nothing by paying the shop to do it.

For $1050, I'll drive over there and fix it for you. Parts included. Your getting ripped. "Make the ride more comfortable." it ain't a HD Electraglide.

You need to find a good local MOTOCROSS mechanic. For the most part, I usually recommend staying away from the bike shops.

If they know for sure that is the problem that means that they have torn the engine down doesn't it? So if that is done it should only be parts and rebuild. $1100 seems like a whole lot to me.

A shop has much more overhead than your garage does. They have to charge to stay in business.

I picked up my bike and bought myself a repair manual and took apart my engine to find out that all that needs to be replaced is the balancer, because a chunk of metal chipped off, and a single bearing. $185 tops is my final estimate for my repairs. Here is the list of parts that were going to be replaced just to fix this damaged balancer and bearing:

Hex nut x2
Bearing
Bearing
Balancer Shaft
Cam Chain
Cam Chain Tensioner
Gaskets
Oil Filter
Water Pump Gear
Balancer Gear
Washer
Oil seal

Parts: $420.58
9 hours of labor @ $72/hr: $648. 00
Total cost: $1068.58

That's just a little bit ridiculous

How come none of the top Factory Mechanics put out complete how to DVD's for all the 250 and 450's and sell them? Hell Chad Watts could do that and make a nice chunk of change?
