Depression is a major symptom.

Self medication. Alcohol and drugs.

I started to notice a higher level of anxiety when stuff started opening up last year. A lot less trust of people in public. Spending two years looking at the world through my phone wasn’t ideal.

I’m way more irritable, but mostly just lost motivation to do almost anything.

For me its been panic attacks, depression, constant dread, feeling tired all the time, brain fog. I had a panic attack so bad a month ago I went to the ER. I always feel like this during the winter but Ive been dealing with way more stress lately so its been a little worse this year.

Had a few panic attacks over the years. Almost always when I’m not exercising enough and I’m stressed as fuck. The simple advice is often the best, look after the basics, the big problems tend to look after themselves.

Yeah. That overwhelming feeling of dread is a mindfuck sometimes. I will lose all ability to focus on any thoughts at times and just need to shut down for a moment, block stimuli, and breath for a minute to get a coherent thought through my head.

I also get physically sick from certain triggers to the point of vomiting, and I have a vasovagal response to nausea, so that's a nice double whammy Sick Sideways

I can't shut my brain off. I will lie in bed up all night just thinking. All my thoughts are always negative as well.

I have taken myself out of pretty big stressful situation and it has helped. I was the Chief of a local fire department during the beginning of the pandemic. Lots of politics and backstabbing thee as well. I retired from there a year ago and it has helped immensely.

Trying to focus more on things that make me happy. Hence my reason for being back on here more. Motocross has always been a positive for me.

It is definitely a big struggle for me, but so far I am winning.

I talked to my family doctor about it too. He explained how it is all related to hormone levels. It also helped to realize that there are many people struggling with this. I thought I was going crazy.

I also quit watching any news or reading about current events. I started to get caught up in the Ukraine invasion and had to back away. Can't worry about things I have no control over.

Sorry to keep ranting, but this is good therapy.

Dang you sound a lot like me. I rarely ever sleep. I’ll lay awake for at least half the night usually then go back in for 12 hour shifts… my memory is shot, I struggle with brain fog, stress is about to the max, anxiety through the roof, etc. I just had my thyroid removed due to thyroid cancer 2 weeks ago. I hope that was causing a lot of my recent problems and I can get back to normal. Although the sleep issue has been my whole life.

I used to have brutal panic attacks, couldn’t leave the house, etc. my doctor was not a pill pusher so he had me start exercising and eating healthier, more fruits and vegetables. It really worked as I very seldom(every 4-5 years) have an attack now. Believe it or not I used to use that saying from Dune when I felt one coming and it helped immensely.

Not sure if I have anxiety but the last two years watching news makes me sad or angry, so I avoid the news and reading all but the comics of newspapers. I feel better.

Had a senior military leader tell me this behind closed doors.

Flip the switch and make it your bitch.

….and I’ll Be damned it helps with all kinds of issues….

Interesting, I am going to etch that one into my memory bank and hopefully figure out a way to do just that. Thanks

Yes! I have problems...bad problems. Anxiety and depression will take me. It is a every day curse. Just last night I was thinking about contacting OC's folk to see how he got it done.

I've seeked professional help but at R4000 / hr...fuck that...

Yes, Anxiety will get us.

TXdirt nailed it...I take tablets but hardly drink....but I'm still fucked. I'm searching for my old self...

I've just taken 4 Tramadol pain killers so that by the time I get home I'll be wanting to sleep.

Sorry for being such a loser ya all but I have problems.

I'm sorry ya all. I just got home. It is fucking stupid living like this. We all work just to pay rent and eat. That's it for us Is that life?

The daily stresses you live with down in ZA are abnormal. Hard to relate to most people, even yourself until you extract yourself from it.

All you can really do is find coping methods. Get a bicycle and pedal that thing till the noise goes away. Repeat daily.

Thank you RaceFan, I have a feeling you are either a Saffa or you are close to someone here.

I'm sorry to turn this thread into a "help my head session" but honestly, I'm not in a good position. All my dearest friends have passed on in the last 5 yrs and those who are left are living in the USA.

The OP asked about Anxiety. He is not alone. Most of us suffer in various degrees.

I don't talk to anyone, I work my 5 day week and weekends I stay at home. I don't feel.like seeing anyone...it's even hard going to shop for groceries.

Vital is nice. There are a few tight mates here but it is also to be able to just open up and let it out. It helps me.

I don't know what the future holds. The day I can't work anymore is will most likely be the day when I have to end it. Most of us here have no retirement lined up.

Anxiety and depression is real...I am dependent of tablets to keep myself here..

That's rough Boomslang. I hope something will come over you and bring you peace.

I don't know if I suffer from anxiety but the mountain of regret is very large. I half way think i have developed a minor case of Tourettes(not really). A negative thought will creep into my mind and I will lightly say fuck, fuck and shake my head a little. Its like I am trying to dislodge it, and shake it from my current memory.

I know what i need to do and that is forgive myself and accept that i am human and that i do not have to be perfect. Have gratitude for the things i do have and the things i have done well in life.

My most natural way of dealing with negative thoughts is to try and find humor in everything. Put a smile on someone else's face. Be lighthearted as much as I can to make up for the times when I am heavy hearted and down on myself.

Another thing that helps A LOT is when my wife and I babysit, or are just around our 2 granddaughters. The older one, shes 3, has a smile that cures almost everything. I believe  you said you have 2 daughters Boom. Maybe looking forward to the day when you have grandkids will bring you some hope.

I’ve had friends that took Ashwaganda and said that helped. Might be a safer alternative.

I wouldn’t even try to say I understand what you’re going through, but keep your head up and I’ll keep praying for you.

You are a good man. And like Sandberm said above, someday you’ll have some grandkids and then see what life is all about!  I have 5. I tell people I wish I could have had the grandkids but not had to put up with raising their parents!

Correct and yes, oddly enough though my family in ZA aren’t even South African but are old and less inclined to move back here.

It’s such a tough environment over there. Even if you completely ignore the media, the way you live and what you see daily has you on high alert 24/7. Fighting to get food on the table nevermind getting ahead.

Neurons that fire together wire together. Probably an over simplistic way of seeing things but I believe that is what makes it difficult to see things positively and because of how life works that doesn’t invite much “goodness” into your life. Your brain is tuned for it but that doesn’t mean it’s permanent. Just takes hard work to get out of the slump.

Intense exercise and some gratitude what you do have is a good coping method and over time will get you thinking a little different. Can also recommend a swim in the cold Atlantic. That’ll get the juices going and is enough to be thankful for.

I got diagnosed with ADHD and it was a life changer. The self doubt, looking back at every embarrassing fuckup and replaying them in my head, thinking of driving my van off a cliff on the way home, negative thought spirals, feeling like something was wrong with me but not knowing what it was. It all went away with just 1 prescription. I just wish I would have been diagnosed 30 years earlier. Everyone talks about the hyperactivity or focusing issues, but ADHD has a lot more symptoms that you never hear about.
