With riders like Jmart, Colt, Forkner participating in few races during the season, does a sponsor get more exposure from a rider like Phil who makes it through the season, goes on pulp, and makes a throat gesture or 2 to keep relevant?

False.

There’s no such thing as positive ROI for sponsors in SX or MX.

I wish Phil was on a 125. B4 he turned Pro he dominated the north east on his CR125. Super fast on the CR250 also.

Well, now you jinxed Phil calling out a full season like that. Since 250 teams are mostly team sponsorship deals its crazy that the teams don't do their own vlogs or post race podcasts to promote their sponsors and riders, racetrack supercross was ahead of their time.. I'm an avid fan and I could hardly name any teams sponsor besides the title, which is not ideal.

Good question but ROI on stuff like this is so vague. What sort of "exposure" is the sponsor looking for?
Product? Personality? Results? I recall Phil talking about a chiropractor, I think, that had helped him out
for years. Is that chiro really getting a return on that? Probably not. Probably more like the guy just likes
Phil and wants to help. I think often the word "sponsor" should be replaced with "benefactor" (and I don't mean
that as a knock.)

By the way, do many racers use Patreon? If so, does it work for them?

Sponsors at the highest level aren’t thinking about ROI. The investment is the ad dollars they get to write off from their profits to help reduce corporate tax burdens. So the moment they sign the check, their goal for the year is accomplished.

Despite jmart having the obvious better results, this is a tough one to answer……must be Phil’s likeable personality.

Not the moto brand sponsors…

The social media aspect is to be considered. I couldn’t find but a few clips of Eli after he switched to Star. Watching the Deegan’s videos though, I’ve seen countless clips of Eli now. And insight into his personality. If you think of what Scott Summers (GNCC guy did) he literally created a space for himself with Honda. He would send out press packets and get himself booked on local radio stations. Honda wasn’t involved in GNCC until he provided them with all that in place exposure. To say sponsors aren’t looking for a ROI is false. Of course they are, or they wouldn’t be sponsoring anyone. It’s hard to quantify it though. When the riders are hurt fi they still go the races or do they sit home? I never liked hearing that injured riders aren’t even at the track to fulfill part of their contract, fan interaction. Even injured NBA players have to attend the games.

As Seinfeld once asked Kramer, “do you even know what a write-off is”? Of course there’s an ROI. Even if it’s to let the public know you’re still in business, that’s a return. We’ve all bought products based on seeing it being used by Pros. If I never heard of Maxima lubricants and saw it sitting in the shelf at Wal-mart, I certainly wouldn’t use it in my bike.

I feel like Phil being your example of consistency is flawed.

Yes this always surprised me that injured riders aren’t required to go to the races for fan interaction, especially in SX

Unlike the real world, in moto a lot of it is guess work due to the three-tier business model

I am sure some mega dollar companies have figured out some metric, but from my experience and talking to others, with our oddball business model, it is really hard to pin down an ROI on any one thing, it's all guesswork
