The best rider in history that never won a race

Edited Date/Time 11/19/2021 3:26am
As I am sitting inside watching it snow and wondering how long it will be until I get to race again, I started watching old races on YouTube. I started thinking about how even the guy in 20th place would look like a superhero if he showed up at a local track. The depth of talent at the top is so deep. I got to thinking about who is the greatest and most accomplished rider in history to never win an AMA Pro Race. I’m thinking it is probably Weston Peick. Can anyone think of someone else in that category that can rival him?

Peick is a good answer, especially in the 450s. AFAIK, he never raced 250s

You would almost have to break it down by 125/250SX races which are regional vs National wins. Or did they win SX and never MX or vice versa.

If they won an AMA regional Supercross race, that is an AMA Pro race win, so they wouldn’t qualify. I’m looking for the best rider that never won an AMA professional race, indoors or out.

Michael Byrne maybe. He spent a long time in the top 10, sometimes top 5 or podium. Technically he did win a race, or just a moto. The first moto at the 2003 Southwick 125cc national on a CR125, the overall was won by Craig Anderson. No overalls or main events though in either class.

Byrne is a good one but I'd say he's out because he won a moto. Maybe Ross Pederson? Won a ton in Canada obviously and did well in AMA SX & MX and USGPs but never won a moto.

Weston Peick probably. It's really hard to pick someone from mxgp.. From research Aleksandr Tonkov best MX2 rider without a win (he didn't ride mxgp), maybe Mitch Evans?

I forgot about Byrne. That’s a good one! A moto win doesn’t equal a race win, so he qualifies.

A quick check of the vault shows that Reynard won 5 nationals, so he’s out.

Scott Burnsworth is by far the best rider to never get an overall win.

I might be wrong, but I think Jason Anderson never won an outdoor national overall.

Kyle Lewis? Maybe not as close to the podium, now that I think of it, but man, he was at it a long time.

Maybe you missed the part that it's about the best rider to NEVER have won a pro race.

Jim Holley has to be close to the top of the list.

Scott Burnworth? Michael Byrne? Mike Guerra? Ron Turner? Jim Gibson?

Gibson is a good one. He has several top 3 outdoor overalls. Did he never manage to win a moto??

https://vault.racerxonline.com/rider/jim-gibson/races

Might be a winner.

Burnworth is also good. Bunch of 2nd, 3rd overalls. Too bad the vault doesn't have moto scores.

(Edit: Note that Gibson won GPs. I know that's not the OP's criteria but if you won on the world championship tour you tasted victory at the top)
