Hi, long time lurker, first time trying to be a real poster.
Quick introduction, my names Josh, currently 25yrs old and I live in Western Australia. I have been involved in motocross for as long as I can remember. Qualified machinist starting back nearly 9 years ago. While I knew working in the tradesman lifestyle was very rewarding in knowledge and decent money, it never really felt right to me. I felt like I needed to be in control of what I felt was right for me physically and especially mentally. Tinkering around with some different ideas, I finally worked out what I wanted to do so I put my foot down the last 6+ months and made a plan to work for myself, doing all sorts of stuff, a lot of it moto related and for the last 6 weeks after making the leap I'm the happiest and healthiest I've ever been, learning every day.
Now that I've got all of that out of the way, one thing I'm doing is supplying a mobile moto servicing and detailing business around my area and also doing some work at home. Which has aloud me to begin my dream of building and restoring bikes as part of my living (and the occasional random thing).
So I wanted to share the builds I'm able to do for customers and my own personally bikes. Ranging from a 98' CR250, new 450's, 70's AG100's and TTR50's. I'm thinking I'll just update my title depending on what I have going on at that time as I'd like to keep all my stuff in one thread, so I'm not blocking up the thread list.

Vapour blasted all the good stuff, except for the engine cases. I did split the engine mainly just for inspection purposes, wish we were able to get the cases blasted but we tried to squeeze the build in before the Manjimup 15000 race we have here but we ended up missing out anyway due to some part shipping delays.
Swingarm axle was absolutely seized to one bush. Had to cut that to remove it. Radiator had a decent split in it which we replaced that with a GPI one.
We discussed what to do with it and we both agreed to go with a stock look with some nice parts here and there. Chose to go with the TJ 99' factory kit but with the plain white shrouds and plate. Waiting on the exhaust to comeback from repairs as I don't have the equipment just yet to try it myself, other than that she's ready to go!
Let me know what you think!
Just finished a quick fix on my 04' KX125 that has sat for around 5 years so we'll see how it goes, its far from perfect and needs some touching up and finishing here and there but I'm sick of looking at it and yes, I'm aware the exhaust needs some elbow grease ahaha.

This was maybe 1998 or 1999 at a dune spot we used to ride once a year.
Is that 1998 engine as fast from mid to top rpm as I remember?
But yes it’s a 98’ through and through, we haven’t got a chance to ride it just yet and was only taken out once before being torn down and wasn’t running the best, so we’ll see how it goes once we get a day to take it out
Asking people with some experience rebuilding suspension themselves. I’m a Fitter/ Machinist by trade and I’ve done a bit of hydraulic work so it’s not completely foreign to me, just seeing if anyone has any tips or tool recommendations as I have always wanted to make this something I can do for myself and others in the future and hopefully fix the issues I’m having with this set.
I have a vague memory of owning a moto mag as a young kid that I kept with pictures of this bike that I absolutely loved so as I never had any intentions of owning an older gen SX, that’s the direction I went. It was an interesting read finding out about the story of MC2, KTM and the Hot Wheels/ Bud Lite deal as it’s just before I was old enough to follow along and it seems to be a year moto history has just swept under the carpet hahah.
Bought it with a blown top end and rear wheel, bought for a really fair price considering the market at the moment, especially down here in Aus.
Frame up service, luckily all the chassis bearings were good and only required a clean out and re grease, no linkage helps with the odds of no blown out bearings 😂
Axles are a ridiculous idea, especially when they become seized with nothing to be able to drive the front axle out without damaging it. Plus the double threaded rear axle, what was the benefit to that over a simple bolt and not system?
Anyway, need to sort out the rear wheel, it has a crack and missing spoke but other then that, it runs well and ready to go 🎃👑
I’ll get some close ups when we get it out to the track in the next week or two.
its pretty straight forward, just pickup the right tools for rebuiling.
Thumpertalk gets a lot of threads where guys will share their shim stack specs so i would check there if your looking for valving help
Had a budget in mind before purchasing which is now a lot tighter as a couldn't get the price down at all and should have walked. Anyway, lesson learnt, now the plan is to do as much hand restorations as possible without replacing too much but not leaving anything I wouldn't be comfortable riding as I want to race it a few times before moving on to something else.
Pit Row
This is how I received the bottom end. Missing one clutch fibre, was told the wear on them was okay but I guess he never guaranteed the quantity
Stripped it down. Found more metal in this 'rebuilt' bottom end then I have in one blown, it has a new crank and bearings also marks in the cases so I'm guess the last rod/ crank failed, just hasn't been cleaned out well at all.
Started on the rear chassis parts. Stripping the swingarm and working on the suspension. All the bearings and seals appear to be in good condition, surprisingly. Still in progress but the rear shock is mostly done:
