What's going on?

Never seen anything like it this year.

Supply/availability fucking with materials/metallurgy or just pot luck?

Super weird whatever it is...

I'd be willing to bet material suppliers are forging certifications and using cheaper quality materials.

Sorry AJ, I was trying to avoid spoilers, but it doesn't really make any difference, I should have just said Ferrandis 👍

Coty Schock lost one (maybe two?) as well this year, swear there was another I'm not remembering also, but have just been all the Husky team problems across practice and race days.

Were they all RK, the Huskys, Star Yamaha and FXR/Chaparal Honda?

Jason Anderson's chain snapped in a practice crash this year too. Hampshire lost one while leading a moto, I swore there was another one as well.

We had one of the chains off a bike that went out before he recall. That looked like a hardness issue. Every pin was completely worn out.

I have a theory as to why chains are breaking more frequently, but I am still trying to gather all the facts before I post my theory.

Can you guys help? I am trying to document all of the recent chain failures (not derailments)

Anderson
FXR Honda - 2x
Star Yamaha

Am I missing any from this year?

How are they failing?

Assuming they are rivetted assemblies with no clip link.

Pins shearing?
Side plates shearing?
Riveting upset letting plates go?
Something else?

I believe Ferrandis' chain was the master link clip.

No idea about the other's, but it would be interesting to know what caused Shock to lose 2 in back to back motos.

Didn't the team claim he got a rock in the chain that broke it?

I didn't think any teams were using master link chains anymore.

A few manufacturers bikes also got recalled for chain replacement because of D.I.D chains breaking.

Honda and also KTM/Husqvarna/Gasgas? I believe.. D.I.D chains breaking

I know that the stock chains are different to what race teams use but maybe there has been production issues effecting all sorts of chains.

Are RK and D.I.D chains related in any way? It may just be a coincidence that the stock chains were breaking around the same time a lot of race bike chains were..

What was the failure mode of the recalls?
